Well, after you get out of the military, you're still in the Inactive Ready Reserve for a certain period of time. I think if you were to serve only one term, the period would be eight years.

[edit]
I just actually read it, and yeah, it seems like he's already fulfilled his entire obligation, so I don't know what's up with that.

That's true, but in this case he finished his 8-year commitment 13 years ago.

well unless they are hard up for soldiers then there is no reason for them to take him.

IF the army is that hard up then they should increase the pay of the soldier.

anyway i think the guy won. I seem to remember seeing this in the news a few days ago.

You're thinking of a different guy, who did in fact win.

The problem here is that, if the Army is really trying to grab this guy, they appear to be doing so illegally. My guess is that this is a misunderstanding, but I guess we'll see . . .

oh well i don't watch much tv.

But yeah i bet it either a computer glitch etc or something. Unless this guy is really really special why would they want him back in when its against the law/rules?

If that soldier was an officer, there is no limitation as to when they can be called back into active duty.

damn. i served from 1987-1997. 2 years over the IIR requirement. Maybe i should be looking over my shoulder for the Air Force to come drag me kicking and screaming back to duty.

I don't believe that's true, and I am an active-duty officer.

Unless they've changed the rules since my husband retired (always a possibility), an officer who retires and is getting a pension can be recalled up to age 60. He has been retired for 13 years and has orders requiring him to report to Ft Gordon if mobilized. But, as husband says, it would take a monumental decimation of forces before they'd ask for the old geezers like him to come back.

Retired officers can always ensure they do not get called up by resigning their commission.

military members who have been discharged from the Army, Army Reserve or the Army National Guard, but still have contractual obligations to the military.

WTF kinda bull sh!t is THAT!?

As I understand, only commissioned officers have further obligations after release from reserve duty. Or at least that's how it was when I was in the service. Has this law changed?
Add to this the fact that the government seems to want to renege on promises it made vets when they signed up (Changing veterans benefits) and all I can say is You have GOT to be kidding me!!!?

I do know this much though, as part of your contract it says you can not sue the government. (or at least is used to)

Edit: I see the officer angle was already covered. Oh well

I met a grandmother who retired after 24 years and she started a day care. After she had been retired for 6 1/2 - 7 years she got callled back up. She had to close the day care and everything. Couldn't believe it.

From the date you enlist, it's 8 years if you serve 2 active and 4 reserve for example you can still be called for another 2.

If you're an officer, what people said for life I believe is true. Glad I wasn't an officer. Yes I'd go back in if it was indeed to help my country defend itself. Since I'm not eligible to be called I wouldn't go back on this wars pretenses which is nothing but bullcrap.

This guy did not retire, nor is he collecting a pension. I don't believe he's an officer anyway, as it happens.

You can still be called up if you're in the Inactive Ready Reserves. My commission was 5 years active duty 10 years Inactive Ready Reserves. And yes they tell all this before you signup.

I know that. You might want to read the article. He fulfilled his IRR commitment 13 years ago.
