Let's see if I have the checklist correct here...

Search to see when last mac thread was made in OT.

If it has been awhile then go ahead and make one.

Topic doesn't really matter. After a few posts it will devolve into a mac users are dumb discussion.

Sit back and watch thread explode with hate.

Is that about right?

My friend uses a Macbook and he dislikes the fact that Apple is slowly disabling some geek (non-hipster) tools that have been present in past versions of OSX

Like what exactly? My only complaint is that apple keeps replacing unix things (crond, .profiles etc) with their own versions and fucking stuff up from release to release.

They have a more attractive case and screen. Most people do not care about having a .2" thinner unibody case or a slightly higher resolution display, or a -0.2lb weight difference.

It's just cooler and is a vanity item. There is no advantage of owning a mac over a pc outside of edge cases. I do not understand the whole PC's have problems argument. I haven't had an issue with Windows or hardware in any of my PCs in over 15 years.

Apple has done an extremely good job with advertisement and outer shell design. From paying movie studios (or supplying them) for product placement to their regular advertisement. I'm actually surprised that their market share isn't higher than it is now.

I just went through the process of reinstalling Mac OS X on two Macs, and reinstalling Windows 7 on two PCs. (I was swapping in some SSDs.)

Doing it on Mac OS X was a breeze. Windows was a fricking PITA. Just the Windows Update process took several hours.

It's totally awesome being able to boot up a MacBook Pro with the install for a MacBook or a Core i7 iMac, despite the fact they have different hardware, including different GPUs. It's also totally awesome being able to boot off external hard drives, either by Firewire or by USB. It's also nice that Mac OS X updates don't consist of a bazillion of individual updates.

OTOH, Windows updates consists of the occasional service packs, and a page full of individual updates... including the stupid Bing install they hide in there. You can't clone Windows 7 installs either unless you have identical or near-identical hardware, because it won't run on the wrong hardware. Plus you can't easily boot off external drives, a major, major annoyance.

Sure you can. It sounds like you just need better cloning software. Use something that supports universal restore and you don't need to worry about hardware differences. I use it quite often and it works pretty well.

I don't think so. It has nothing to do with cloning. There's a very low success rate when you simply move a drive from one system to another, even if you get the controller mode correct between legacy/IDE mode and AHCI/SATA mode.

WTF is this gif? Dance? Seizure? Drugs? Combination of all 3?

It's from this viral/troll/whatever it is music video.

They do, they just hide that aspect of it from the end user.

Also, I would certainly hope that updating a Mac would be an easy and painless process, given that you have to pay good money for the privilege.

I am talking about universal restore, not simple cloning or moving drives between systems. I use universal restore all of the time for work and my success rate is nearly 100%. With UR the hardware layer is stripped out and your first boot will have Windows detect your hardware like normal.
