Real mature fella. You have to pay your part. Do you think brown people the world over are just going to oppress themselves?

Actually they probably would. :awe:

There is always the chance that lil rudeguy's mom will pull some bullshit. I do it this way just in case.

And be serious...if I had it in a savings account, that would have paid $100 in interest max. Its not that big of a deal.

Ah. And true enough about the savings account.

If I promise not to opress anyone, can I have all my tax money back?

"Give the government an interest free loan"
How the hell much interest would you have earned if you put it in a savings account instead? On a $500 return, you would have averaged about $250 in there over the course of the year. Maybe a little more, since you don't get it back until Feb; but less than $300 average. 1% interest? Woohoo! You could have made *gasp* THREE DOLLARS! What a sucker, giving the gov't an interest free loan. If you got a $10,000 return, and could have banked it at 2% interest instead, you missed out on about $100 in interest.

Many people would save more money than that each year just by keeping their tires properly inflated.

lol...I have offered to spawn a few offspring with chicks at work so we can have some tax deductions. Yet another thing that I guess is "not HR appropriate"

Work sucks.

But is it properly inflated to maximum sidewall pressure?

Do you also promise not to use anything that's paid for as government services? You know...things like roads, police & fire protection...oh wait, you get all those by default...you can't promise NOT to use them...same with the national protection afforded by our military forces, work place safety from OSHA, etc.
Oppression is done on your behalf by our gubmint. You don't have to actually do it yourself...kind of like the other government services...

Just buck up and pay up.

So what you're saying is... I should buy a car with my tax return?

Looking at what's going on in Egypt I think they're doing a pretty fair job of it.

Nice to know you caught the sarcasm, though. :whiste:

Today at work we were talking about our tax refunds. It was mostly picking on one of the younger guys who doesn't have kids. One chick asked me how much I was getting and when I said almost $5k, she flipped. She went flush, and started stuttering "THAT'S NOT FAIR!"

Umm...ok. I asked her how much she was getting back and it was only like $2k. Ok...how much did you pay in? She said it was around $1500. So I pointed out that I paid in almost $7k. So yes, I am getting more back but I PAID $2k in taxes while she is getting paid $500. She still insisted that its not fair. Keep in mind...we have the same exact job. Her income potential is the exact same thing as mine.

This is seriously what is wrong with the country. No one wants to pay their own way. Everyone expects a damn handout. People get pissed when someone else has something go their way.

Its like everyone is devolving into 3 year olds.

My question to you is, why are you overpaying? That's an extra $400 a month you could put in to savings or investments that you're giving the government interest free.

THIS. I still don't understand how taxing us less helps the gov't out.

Lower taxes ---> more money in people's pocket ---> more spending ---> more manufacturing/sales ---> more taxes (and a better economy).

Then again, some people think that more taxes ---> more government spending ---> something good I have not figured out yet.

I think the idea with the second one is more like

more taxes ---> lower government deficits ---> less running up the national debt

The counterargument to that is that higher taxes means more businesses will move elsewhere, so it isn't as effective as it may seem at raising revenues. Look at cigarette taxes - make them too high and eventually people will start quitting smoking, and your higher tax rates don't bring in any more money than they did in the past.

Also, many people see raising taxes as a better alternative to making painful cuts in spending.

I think a healthy balance is important. Democrats want to maintain or raise taxes while maintaining spending. Republicans want to decrease taxes and spending. But the problem is that no one has the guts to make the deep cuts necessary to actually balance the budget. Even fiscally conservative Republicans and Tea Partiers only seem willing to scratch the surface of what's necessary and refuse to consider cutting military or entitlement spending. Instead they talk about earmarks, which are a tiny portion of total government spending.

Or we could quit being the world's police, and running to the rescue every time a country needs something.

As for the topic at hand, I don't understand why you'd want to pay thousands more than necessary unless you have a highly variable income and want to make sure you aren't forced to pay thousands more at tax time. I'm getting about $800 back this year, which is more than I expected. Much more than that and I'd rather just have that extra amount spread out over the year. But I'd rather pay a little extra than have to pay hundreds extra in April.

Where I work, some people think the person with the biggest refund must know the most about taxes. That's how invisible withholding is to them.

I think some people just don't realize how taxes work. She probably barely understands the connection between the tax withholdings on her paycheck and what happens when you file.
