So I was walking up the stairs to my friends house like I do everyday but I had a best buy bag in my hand. So my friends neighbor asks me what I bought, I told him a CD (the new fabolous).

Then he tells me he just downloads his crap from my friends connection. I thought he was kidding because its password protected and what not but I told her anyway and she told me that she had given him the password when his connection was down so he could get his school work done

Now she is freakin out being caught but is there a way to prove that the DL wasn't to her computer if something happens????

Quit stealing your friend's internet to pirate music.

I actually purchased my music

I like how everyone on ATOT becomes a purchaser of music... but in teh background you can see uTorrent running and Newsleecher =)

And then when people discuss bandwidth emails from Comcast, everyone jumps in to say they've gotten one.

But it's not the OP, it's the OP's friend's neighbor who's worried about getting caught for pirating music.

That's two whole degrees of separation!

Good story, but you are going to jail. And so is she on conspiracy.

I have a get out of jail for free card. It was given to me because I do such a good job of putting people in jail myself...perks of the job.

thank you for a direct answer. The pass and ssid has already been changed! I told her that she prolly has nothing to worry and she is blowing it out of proportion.

If they are going to prosecute you they have the burden of proof that you stole the song. Not sure how it would hold up in court, but with a jury I do not see how they could convict you of the crime if no evidence of the song is found on your computer or being sent to your computers MAC address. Pretty sure there are more ways to show the song was never on her computer. If she can prove she had a PW and encryption on her router. I don't see a jury anywhere convicting her.

You have some legal responsibility to secure your router, and not to make it insecure. By insecure I mean leaving it wide open, or giving away your password.

This could be tough, and depending on your lawyer, you could get some crazy results.

Tell your friend to check for an email from the ISP. That's usually a way to know if they've known what bad things you've done.

This has already become an issue, and the burden of proof is on the RIAA/MPAA for now.

Oh sh!t, the feds are going to come after your friend. Tell her to go get a tin foil hat, a shot gun, some chicken flavored ramen, salt, bug spray, burger king coupons, a 7elevn slurpee, chuck norris, a thunderbird, 2 eggs, and a dog. Then have her bust down her neighbor's door and shoot him for stealing from her.

That is a serious offense and whoever pays the bill on the connection is likely in serious trouble. There is no way that they an link it to the neighbors computer so he won't get any of the blame. I'd guess it will be 20-30k in lawyer fees and fines to get out of this one.

The black helicopters are on the way. Say goodby to your friend while there is still time.
