My parents are awesome. They're first-gen Asian immigrants. I taught them how to use computer about 5 years ago. Since then they really took off on their own.

My dad has several HS friends that also moved to US in NY, GA, and AL. He taught them to use Google Hangout video chat to drink together! And on his birthday last month, they all met up to drink in New York. One friend couldn't make it, so my dad brought his laptop, connected it to the restaurant's wifi, set up video chat, and his friend got to celebrate remotely from Alabama, as they drank all night.

They should be featured as real-life G+ advertisements.

And my mom sold so much house junk for cash using the Korean-equivalent Craigslist. They figured all this out on their own, wtf.

My mother's gone a few months now without turning off the menu bar in Thunderbird, and telling me she can't write emails. Come to think of it, I'm not sure she's done that since switching to Ubuntu; more than a few months if that's the case. Not sure what the difference is, but I'll take what I can get.

My parents are morons when it comes to technology, especially my mom. They are always calling me asking for help. Ugh...

They've called me countless times in the beginning, and still do. But their adaptability to learn on their own have been nothing short of amazing.

You're lucky. I could show my mom how to do something a hundred times, and she still can't do it.

I think learning comes from just having fun to use it.

If someone is not inherently interested in computers, they'll take forever to learn.

But if they're having fun and turn into a typical internet addict, they'll learn and figure out lots of crap on their own.

Same here. My retired parents fall into the exact opposite bucket as the OP's. They have access to everything but they're unwilling to learn how to use it beyond simple very web surfing and emails for fear of somehow screwing up the computer which I've reassured them is not something they can do easily.

My mom is ok with the computer, she can do the basic stuff like email etc no problem. My dad on the other hand has to learn each step by heart. Things like an icon not being in the same location or a tool bar being in another location will completely throw him off. He's gotten better though, I don't get calls every day anymore.

My mom skipped the entire computer/mouse/keyboard generation and went straight to tablet computing.

Man good to know in this thread that we have to support them endlessly out of love. Good shit.

My dad is hopeless on the computer but my mom is pretty sharp and self-starting with it. I eventually got my dad a Mac years ago to end the constant calling. He seems to want to stay willfully ignorant with it.

Same. If a door knob had more that one step they'd both be trapped inside the house forever.

My dad has worked at a computer OEM since I was a kid so actually showed me how to assemble a 286 and install ram etc when I was like 8 years old. Parents are in their 50s now and text etc. Hell I found out about whatsapp through my mom.

Gotta say its great when old people still adapt. I gave my friends 70+ dad a monitor yesterday so he can chat and trade stock and email and keep up with everyone

My mom is a complete technophobe. Teaching her how to use a computer was painfull. Finally gave up and bought her a Ipad. She uses the Ipad 3-4 hours a day now.
