WTF!!! No warranty on WD drive brought from Newegg?

I got a Western Digital drive for a system I put together back in the fall of 2001. The drive has now failed, but WD's web site says that it has no warranty. I can't talk to someone today, but I thought they had a 3 year warranty. What's the deal?

It should have a 3year warranty... it'd might've been manufactured before then. If it was, you will need your receipt to show that you have had it for less than three years. Otherwise, they go by the manufacture date.

Yeah, I think so anyway. I know it wasn't in a WD box. It's dated Sept 24 2001.

Some Retailers will include or you can purchase an extended warranty on OEM stuff. Just depends on the Retailer.

I thought it didn't matter if it's OEM, as long as the date is stamped on the drive, you have a 3-year warranty. The newer drives have only 1 year, so it depends on the manufacturer's date.

I ran into the same prob with an IBM drive.....Turned out it came from a DELL computer and IBM would not warrenty it. I bitched to Newegg and they sent me a replacement,

I've bought drives in just the plastic anti-static bag before and they've come with the full 3 year warranty. I know because I've had to replace a few!
I assume these bare drives = OEM? They definitely didn't have retail packaging or accessories.

I'd get on the phone Monday and try to work something out.

OEM drives usually only have a 1 year warranty. Most items that are OEM only have a 1 year warranty. Intel CPUs that are OEM typically only have a 30 day warranty. It all depends on the reseller.

I just looked at Newegg's website and the WD OEM drives either have a 1 or 3 year warranty so it depends on them.

Edit: Also, some manufacturers will not honor the OEM drives. You have to go back to where you bought it from.

oems are a crapshoot. sometimes you'll get one with a nice 3 year, and sometimes you'll get a system pull with noone to back up your purchase.

All the OEM 8Mb cache drives have 3 year warranty, the 2Mb cache drives only have 1 year, looking at the dates you posted looks like you have 2 Mb model So you might be out of luck. Thats why its silly to buy a 2Mb cache model these days all the manufactures are doing this only 1 year on them.

I'm pretty sure the 2MB were the only game in town back then. I'll give Newegg a call later today.

Until recently, they did have 3-year warranties. If yours was made before they changed it (Oct 1, 2002, IIRC), it has a 3-year. I don't see how they could get out of that.

It's an OEM drive and should have a 3-year warranty. If it doesn't, NewEgg sold you an export-only drive, that's why you have no warranty. Contact Newegg and tell them to replace it.

I don think so. Go to newegg and see for yourself. It tells you what the warranty is for each drive.

that drive should still be under warranty. rh71 is correct, it should have a 3-year warranty either it's OEM or not. many newer OEM (and retail) drives only have a 1-year warranty, but this was a recent change. i've never had a problem RMA'ing an OEM drive with WD within the warranty period. i would call them and ask why it's not coming up as under warranty.
