I thought this was common knowledge. They might start there but they'll also top near there. I guess it could be impressive if you're IT or engineer making $45-60k starting out in comparison. If I was going to school for that long and in that kind of competitive program, I could think of other fields where the pay is double or triple that coming out and the ceiling lot higher.

And if you pick a profession based solely on the potential income, I wish you luck because you're going to be a very unhappy person.

Pharmacy is an obsolete field, and should be done away with. Computers are more than capable of flagging drug interactions.

AFAIK computers already do the pill counting. Pharmacists pretty much just has to work with patients when needed, which is quite rarely.

Yep, pharmacists are always in demand. Pharmacy schools don't really matter (some state schools don't need PCATs test scores). If you get into a less prestigious pharm school you'll make the same as one from a private pharm school just with less debt. You count to 30-60-90 all day everyday and it's very tedious. But there are the automated counters and pill dispensers and there are programs to determine bad drug interactions. You can get sued for giving the wrong medication but that's what insurance is for.

If pharmacy life gets boring you can go work at a drug company and make a little bit more.

/wishes I went to pharm school...

Kind of fucked up that we have people wishing that a job field should be replaced by computers. I love technology, but it has probably killed as many jobs as our companies outsourcing overseas. Can you imagine what will happen to our lower class when fast food companies replace their workforce with machines? Hell imagine a completely automated Walmart...

From what I've heard, many current students and newly-minted pharmacists are complaining about lack of job opportunities and increased market saturation due to the number of pharm schools popping up around the country. Then again, it might just be a case of the vocal minority out-screaming the content majority.

You want to go back to the good old days when everything was super expensive? Computers make things cheap so everyone has access.

I was musing after watching IBM's Watson on Jeopardy of all the professions that computers could replace. I think pharmacists are high up on that list. I mean, an AI computer with a patient's medical history and a database of all known drugs could spot drug interactions as well or better as any human out there. Pharmacists could argue that they provide the "human" touch and counseling, but then I don't think that would warrant a six-figure salary, either.

I love how it takes them 20min to fill my gf's birth control prescription. It comes in a pack, all they do is put a sticker with her name on it.

from what i heard, the demand is up this year because they recently increased the length of pharmacy programs so there was a year or 2 where there were no new pharm graduates.

We aren't talking about people making $5 an hour here. We're talking about people making in excess of $100K a year performing functions a computer could easily do. Their salary represents a huge amount of overhead given what they actually do.

I think a good portion of the wait at a pharmacy comes from running the prescription through insurance.

No one knows your job better than someone who's never done it.

Sorry, but it's going to be some time before a computer can do the job. For all the talk of Watson, it doesn't make judgment calls. Had some guy bitch some years ago and much of the talk was the same as here. Know what a pharmacist is good for? To keep your doctor from killing you

Pharmacy is a 6 year degree now, and there's good reason for it. Medicines is quite complex, and physicians don't have the time to learn all the details. That's why pharmacies in hospitals get calls from the docs all the time asking about certain situations.

It's more than putting your pills in a bottle, and if you think that attorney mandated sheet is a replacement, Cthulhu help you.

It would be a boring ass job though. At least the ones working retail at places like walmart, CVS, etc...

I thought so back in 1992, but with internet you can just nef all day, check your tech's work and make bank.

As long as you can duck those condoms and pregnancy tests being thrown at you by patients with fake prescriptions you are good to go.

I think they're jacking off back there. The medication I get for my blood sugar thing comes in a brand name package with all of the instructions printed on the label. It takes them a good 10-20 minutes to put a sticker on it and figure out how to charge my insurance for this thing. I can understand paperwork taking a while, but they have all of my stuff on file. They don't even ask for insurance information since they already have it.

When does that happen? I don't even really talk to the pharmacist. I give them the thingy, go sit down for a while, they give me the pills, I say thank you, end of transaction.
I later found out that I am absolutely not supposed to drink alcohol while taking these blood sugar pills. The doctor and pharmacist didn't say anything about it because it says so on the peel-away label. I guess they naturally assumed that most people read instructions all the way through. :awe:

You must really hate bulldozers and front end loaders. Think of all the people with shovels they replaced...

Touche.

Maybe when I am older that might be true, but I refuse to speak to the pharmacist now and the fact that Wal Mart requires it is ridiculous.

I've never seen that. You have a package that knows how you are going to take your medication before you get it? How's that work? Now this pharmacy you go to, everyone is sitting around doing nothing before you got there? I bet there is a queue of prescriptions needing to be filled. The majority of pharmacists don't have a chance to eat lunch with two hands in a 12 hour shift because they are taking care of hundreds or more prescriptions a day. Of course you never see that.
When does that happen?

It usually happens when you aren't looking. If a pharmacy is filling 400 prescriptions a day, there will usually be 10 to 20 that will need to be called about. In the course of a week, more than a couple would have most likely have killed someone if not caught.

All of that you never see either. It's just fixed and the next thing moved on to.

Some of that depends on the state you are in. The government mandates a lot you never know about, or it could just be Wallyworld. Dunno.
