So they are striking in one of the districts and the newspaper says the avg pay is about $76k. I know teachers are important but $76k for 9 months of work, many more days holidays than private sector people get, and the ridiculous benefits and pensions seems like it doesn't match with what the market bares in this time period.

not all teachers are worth that much, but the service they provide is basically invaluable

You dont want to know what the cops/fireman make. I underwrite their mortgages.

Edit: Then again you dont want to know what a processor/underwriter at a good company makes either. I guess we are inflated because the cost of living is high. Meh.

Become a teacher then if you don't like. For years and years no one cared because they had all these great private sector jobs, with christmas bonuses, take home cars, and conventions in vegas, etc etc. People looked down on the civil servants. Economy goes bad and the old private sector "keep up with the jones" types throw bitch fits. Cry more and go wallow in pity.

I've heard stories of cops and firefighters making ~150-200k after all the OT. It seems pretty crazy especially how their pensions are determined and us taxpayers have to foot the bill.

Are you saying that basically no American is worth what they think they are worth? It is apparently becoming increasingly clear as every job is getting outsourced to India.

Become a cop or a firefighter then. Or don't call 911.

Apparently these are the times when jealousy rears its ugly head.

Yes, we are paying most of these guys to sit on their ass and get fat eating donuts.

Honestly, I think the average fat-ass weight of cops is pretty damn telling in how little actual work they do outside of directing traffic and ticketing people.

But I guess our Nation is built on speeding tickets, traffic jams, and diabetes. We do not care about the Engineers, Scientists, artists, and innovators.

I never know where the papers pull these numbers from but I'm pretty sure they get elevated by certain outliers. Coaches make a ridiculous amount of money as do school administrators. So I'm pretty sure that raises it.

And not everywhere will teachers make 76k. Perhaps in parts of the US where costs of living is high and salaries have to adjust. There's also larger incomes in those communities and they can afford it easier.

Trust me most teachers make very much middle of the pack and they deserve better then what they get. OT usually doesn't exist for teachers so all the work they put in after hours is simply part of their normal salary. Often summers are used for preparation and continuing on with certifications, etc.

So yeah, if you think it so easy go teach school for a year and report back.

Yup, like every American should ever aspire to be in life is putting out fires and writing speeding tickets.

They work a full year in that 9 months.

And then some. I spend a semester observing in a high school. My teacher was one of the up and comers, a real good one. Work every day, several hours of take home lesson planning and grading, weekends are either at school functions or meeting students at the public library to conference on portfolio pieces. Writing up grant applications and getting into progams, spent the summer going to a journalism program to get one started at the school.

I was working 45 hours a week and taking 18 hours of college courses, and I really didn't look forward to working that hard for the rest of my career.

The great thing about America is that we can aspire to be whatever we want. Unfortunately, America also means we are stuck with asses like you.

Great argument, actually I make enough for myself, but I'm also bright enough to question certain things don't seem right. btw to the underwriter could you tell us how much cops and firefighters make? I'd like to know if the OT figure is in the ballpark.

You couldn't pay me enough to be a high-school or elementary school teacher. My father teaches at a college and I could see doing that.

If they did not pay people enough to live in the area then there would not be anyone able to do the work consistently.

Whelp, I was looking at your link and my post, and the median family income in San Clemente is almost 20K higher. That would include people with lesser education.

Median home prices? $842K.

76K in those conditions sucks.

It is a vary dangerous job though so I think the best of the best do deserve that money.

What bothers me is when bureaucrats are making more money than someone in the private sector doing the same job. There's so many here in Ontario making over $100,000 for jobs that might pay half that on average, if you're lucky, out in the real world. There were subway ticket collectors in Toronto making that! They claim that's because of overtime but I'd sure like to see what overtime rates they get!! Plus they get benefits to die for. The government then has the gall to raise my taxes to pay for those s.o.b's salaries while cutting back on my services. Oh sorry, they can't pick up my garbage every week but at least the bureaucrats are all getting nice raises.

total avg family income, is different from avg individual teacher income. But imo a teacher in the city of Compton where the median house price is probably 1/6 should be paid the highest amount. These teachers probably have a much more stressful job.
