This is only one of VERY few movies that made me jumpy. The Bone Collector, CandyMan, and fear dot com were kind of freaky, and I'd have to say The Ring rates up there. Come to think of it, these are the only four movies that made me a little edgy. Older scary movies are a joke (ie The Excorcist ... I laughed through the whole thing).

the scariest scene in the ring was the closet scene with that girl where her face was all mutilated. That occured near the beginning and i wasn't expecting that. Other than that, it was mildly scary.

edit: But its a good movie to watch with a chick/gay guy since he/she will get the lights scared out of her and will cuddle with you in fear

it freaked me out. some parts were scary but its more creepy! i don't wanna watch it again!

as for signs, i thought it was dumb. the aliens didn't creep me out. i guess i didn't let myself get to involved with the plot, that's why.

I just finished watching it, and it's the most disturbing movie I have seen in a long time.

Did anyone watch the DVD extras that said "Do not watch this"? It had some interesting stuff that was left out of the film.....

** The more I think about it, the entire film seemed like part of a NIN (Nine Inch Nails) video.

I just finished watching the DVD & it's extras such as the deleted scenes. The NIN analogy is right on John.

As for it being scary, I didn't think it was at all

I'm a HUGE HUGE horror movie buff, and The Ring is one of the scariest yet. I watch all my horror movies at night with the lights off and headphones though, so the atmosphere is more conducive to it. The original Japanese was maybe even scarier (only because i watched it before the American version), but i found it had a lot more holes than the American version... but if you watch all 3 of the Japanese one (Ringu, Ringu 2, Birthday (prequel to all 3, but watch them in that order)), then it makes sense. Trust me, in the right atmosphere, The Ring is one scary movie. I had trouble sleeping for 2-3 days, and i've seen probably every single horror movie that has ever been made and worth watching.

On the other hand, the new Dreamcatcher by Stephen King blows. I'm not even sure what to categorize it as, but it definitely isn't horror.

It's about 5:00am here. I just finished watching "The Ring" by myself in the dark.

It was good enough to get me! I'm not a Friday the 13th / Halloween type horror fan. But I do LOVE a good scare.
The Ring did it for me. Sure it wasn't the scariest movie I've watched. But it sure was worth the cost of rental.

To be fair, I did think the story line was a little disjointed. I like having things wrapped up enough in the end to where "I get it". There were some holes in "The Ring". But all in all it treated me to a good time.

Anyone have any recommendations for videos similar to "The Ring"?

Ah, other similar movies to it:

Ringu, Ringu2, Birthday... this is the original Japanese Ring movies. Very scary, scarier than the Hollywood version according to most people... i think so too, but that's because i seen it before i saw the Hollywood version.

The Eye (Chinese, so you'll need to read subtitles unless you can understand Cantonese)... good movie, they're coming out with a Hollywood version soon (Tom Cruise is producing it i believe).

Dark Water... VERY Ring like. Same people that wrote the Ring (the Japanese versions). It's in Japanese as well, so you'll need to read subtitles.

Don't worry about reading subtitles... it takes nothing away from the atmosphere.

There weren't any subtitles in Session 9 but they might have helped it out a bit. Too much of the actors and not enough of "the force".
But it was still worth the cost of rental.

Session 9 wasn't too bad.

A movie to stay away from that i just saw was Darkness Falls... that was pathetic. Story about a twisted Tooth Fairy that kills people.

It's hard to find a good scary movie nowadays. I think the horrors and thrillers they used to make when i was young were scarier. Now there's less thought put into it.

the wife and I rented the Ring hopeing for a good scarry movie. She usually freaks out on them.

We pulled out the hide-a-bed from the couch and turned off all the lights and turned it on. The only time she jumped was at the closet scene.

It was a good movie but not scarry at all. i was slightly disapointed :disgust:

I enjoyed the movie, and thought it was pretty freaky myself. I'm a "chilling, really creepy" sort of horror fan, the the startle you out of your seat type of fan.... so the Ring was dead on. If you go into the movie thinking it's going to be the scariest thing of all time, though, it'll never live up to that expectation and you will be disappointed. Half of my movie enjoying experience is based upon my expectations going in. That's why I typically enjoy watching movies I've heard nothign about. Starts me off with a clean slate.

"Half of my movie enjoying experience is based upon my expectations going in."

That's exactly what happened to me when I went to see "We Were Soldiers". I'd heard so much about it on the History channel and from people at who had seen it. It was a big let down.
I had also heard a lot about "The Blair Witch Project"... but it still got me!

You obviously don't go to the movies much. there have been many steaming piles. The Ring was a creepy movie. It might have been better if some ass handn't pulled the fire alarm in the theatre and stopping the movie, then having to leave and then come back in and start again.

The Ring was good.

If you want to talk bad, Darkness Falls was crap and so was Signs.

You ever consider that maybe you were more easily scared when you were little?

Anyways, i think modern horror movies are much better than those when i was little... there were only a couple of movies i were truly scared, the Exorcist and Poltergeist series... all the others were just slasher movies like Friday 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Night of the Living Dead, etc.

Anyways, a good horror movie i just watched was Darkness. Great storyline, with a great ending... and LOTS of moments where i was scared. I can really see a sequel coming out of this one.
