Gun bill gets shot down by panel

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Jesus...

It's easy to see irony after the fact. However, I think many people would have agreed with her comments at the time.

As a gun owner, I have never agreed with banning guns from law abidding citizens... there are a lot of people like me.. there are even a few in Virginia... How many of these students could have been saved if the students were armed themselve? Who knows?

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The average person is so impulsive and stupid that you can't even trust them to drive a car....and you are saying let them carry guns? Regardless if they are in college or not...they are still basically kids. They have just entered the start of their adulthood. You don't think that at the start of any problem that shootings won't happen over trivial stuff? I would think it would. For example, if both students knew the other was carrying a gun and some kind of argument or fight breaks out; how long do you think it would take before guns are drawn in "self-defense"?

For starters, you have to be 21 to legally own and depending on the state you are in, qualify for a concealed permit. Second, faculty should be considered as part of this. No one is advocating sending every student to school with a firearm - that is just silly. The only thing anyone is advocating is that they be given the choice to do so in a legal manner.

This is ridiculous. I don't know anyone there who wants to talk about it, and i don't either, just a terrible situation.
Obviously something has to happen here because there has been way too much going on with shootings and bomb threats.

I'm just glad no one i know was on that side of campus this morning.

All this talk about putting guns in the hand of law abiding citizens is crazy. Sure it MIGHT make people think twice about shooting someone, but it will also make the escalation of situations much more common place. Bottom-line, right now I feel relatively comfortable and confident when I go out that the vast majority of the people do not carry guns and are of no threat to me. If I knew that carrying guns were legal it would make me far less comfortable and trusting of people. The current times is nothing like generations ago. The kids then and the kids now are very much different. There are far more dysfunctional house holds, all of a sudden there are more syndromes and disorders, more drugs, etc. I don't know how to explain it...but I just plain don't trust the people from my generation on with anything.

Knives are equally deadly and perfectly legal. Most shooting occur within a ten foot distance from the target well with in range for a face to face knife attack. You should probably not leave your house anymore just to be safe.

Well by your logic then; Pens, forks, spoons, etc. are legal and can be lethal. So I should be afraid of that too. I know what you are trying to say but the level of lethality and possibility for mass casualty between a knife and gun are too disparate to try to compare the two.

Mass casualty? what if he set off a couple pipe bombs in the cafe? Ban home depot? Your fear of guns is irrational.

God I love how we get quicker news at AT than on CNN.

CNN, unlike ATOT and faux, likes to verfiy the story before they post random comments information.

I meant how we have students from VT posting here.

k, now i am hearing it's an Asian in custody from a couple of peeps. Not that that adds to the story.

This is supposed to be a picture of a person handcuffed by the cops. You be the judge. When I saw the pic, the first thing that came to my mind was that this guy looked like of Oriental descent -- even from far away. I'm only saying this because I am of Oriental descent and somehow the person in custody looked Oriental to me.

if you are of "oriental descent" that you should know that you should not refer to yourself as oriental, but that you are of Asian descent. I would understand this if you're not Asian, but that's not the case.
To be politically correct, "Oriental" is used to describe objects.

that is, unless you're an inanimate object, then please accept my apologies.

wrong thread to bring up PC bullsh!t

This isn't the wild west - people who actively go out to get CC permits aren't gun toting psychos who's going to pull a gun for a trivial matter. People like that ONLY pull out the gun in a LIFE threatening situation.

If we make it legal to carry conceal weapons then there will be a lot of people who will go and get it. Because if you know a bunch of people have it then you will want one to "protect" yourself. Look at the way countries are trying to develop nuclear technologies to keep up and "protect" themselves from countries that already have it. Anyone with a clean record and patience can get a license...that doesn't mean that those people won't ever kill anyone with that power. They can either flip out because their wife/husband cheated on them. They can accidentally jump to conclusions and mistakenly shoot someone over a misunderstanding because they thought the other guy had a gun and was putting them in danger. STUPID PEOPLE WILL GET THEIR HANDS ON THE GUN...GUARANTEED. Why make it legal to carry them and force other people to feel they have to get one to protect themselves?

azzholes, go make your own thread.

I'm guessing the OP is okay, just not with internet right now. He said there was a cop guarding them, or in their room, right? And no cops were killed.

Good luck with that, these guys can't take a hint that most people in this thread don't want to read their posts, they want to discuss what has happened at VT. Nothing is going to change the fact that this DID happen. Gun laws can be discussed elsewhere.

Last I read, the campus is closed today. It opens again tomorrow but no classes. Classes maybe on Wednesday?

In any case, I'm pretty sure that all the students are going to be getting a break when it comes to their finals grades.

You are dense. IT IS NOT AN IRRATIONAL FEAR OF A GUN. IT IS THE FEAR TOWARDS THE PEOPLE WHO CAN POTENTIALLY WIELD IT.

Can you people stfu about guns or no guns...

FACT: Guns Exist...

FACT: It is possible to get items, even if they are illegal

FACT: It is possible to get Guns even in places where they are illegal

FACT: Simply outlawing guns doesnt stop things like today from happening...

Now with that out of the way...

Is anyone at VT who can provide more details as to whats going on? I have a cousin there who teaches in the Engineering dept.... and she's not answering her cell... which has me a tad bit worried...

her name : Dr. Leigh Mccue...

does anyone know anything?

Im concluding your half retarded. It is legal to carry. It has been since the birth of this country. People that want guns can buy them legally or illegally and they do. Are you like 12?
