you are also dense.

banning guns will not do anything but hurt innocent people. IF this guy did not have a gun he would have used explosives (wich you can get far more easy then guns. but take some time).knives etc.

the guy was nuts. banning anything would not have mattered. people would have still died.

I would like to point out that school shootings do not happen in this country, where guns are tightly restricted to hunting and pest control.

Do they use explosives instead as you suggest? No they don't. These things just do not happen. Why is that do you think?

you are agreeing then that it has nothing to do with the weapons legality and what is used. It is cultural/societal problem.

Uh, I never mentioned anything about counting numbers. Does it really matter how many students died or were wounded? When the ordeal is over, real info will come out.

God I love how we get quicker news at AT than on CNN.

CNN, unlike ATOT and faux, likes to verfiy the story before they post random comments information.

I meant how we have students from VT posting here.

And how some of them have been wrong. Like someone saying there are 2 shooters then later CNN says they do that as SOP, not because there are 2 shooters.

So did CNN, they reported the same inititally. And I like knowing when something is happening as soon as it is happening. Stop argueing a stupid subject.

Handguns would be best. easy to conceal, carry, and you could carry even more ammo. Just as easy if not more so to reload.

AS for those that don't want the gun discussion in this thread... It's related to the incident. For the next several weeks, people will be debating firearm ownership, illegally obtained firearms, all in relation to this incident. Quite normal to have these components as part of our discussions.

Now with that out of the way...

Is anyone at VT who can provide more details as to whats going on? I have a cousin there who teaches in the Engineering dept.... and she's not answering her cell... which has me a tad bit worried...

her name : Dr. Leigh Mccue...

does anyone know anything?

Hope She is alright!!!

i heard on the radio, interviewing a student at VTU said that he had a really hard time getting a hold of his dad, id imagine the cell network in that area is getting hammered.

hope your cousin is okay.

Wow, MSNBC just said the guy may have chained the doors of building closed after he went in to prevent people from getting out.

I heard that too. :Q :|

Wait - we can't talk about chaining doors......

But seriously.... That shows a premeditated attack. He thought this out, must have been familiar with the campus even if not a current student.

umm...
no wonder people are so afraid of guns, they have no clue about them

what are you confused about? rudee made a valid point and i would agree that this guy had to be a very accurate shot to kill this many. most random shootings have several wounded for every death.

I don't disagree with you there. People are the ones that pull the trigger. But the comments that made me throw my 2 cents were the ones regarding the law being passed to restrict students from carrying guns on the Tech campus. People were saying that had students been allowed to carry guns that it would have defused the situation and that just does not add up to me. I think you and I got caught in a different argument.

They're setting up a center at the Inn at Virginia Tech to provide information, and right now they're notifying next of kin as fast as they can get people identified from what I understand.

If someone you think is on campus isn't answering their cell, don't panic yet, because the cell phone channels around campus have been tied up left and right. They might not be getting your call. Keep trying.

This has been quite an insane thread. Too bad ppl messed it up arguing about whether gun toting should be legal or not!

On a side note...sorry for any of you who may have lost someone out there...truly a tragic event. I will never understand the human race...honestly. Some of these people that think they're doing something right or good, and it something like this...just disgusting.

Not as such no, I think those things are linked - gun control is a big part of teaching people that actually it is not ok to kill other people. In a society where people go round toting guns and talking about shooting eachother, what are kids supposed to think?

Just to be clear I'm not against guns as such - I like guns as a technical thing, and they're fun to fire, but I would *never* carry one one the street.

You can take away the guns, knifes, and other pointy objects, but that capacity for violence still exists.

Blaming it on just guns is a form of intellectual surrender.

thats complete BS. how can you sit there and seriously say such a thing. You're telling me England doesn't have a history of violence? the USA is a little over 200 years old. Eurooean countries have been around for a lot longer and have a much longer history of violence.
