my take on the sequence of events...
Option A: dude shows up early in the morning at his girlfriend's dorm room, unexpectedly finds her in bed with another guy. flies into a rage and shoots them both to death. he then flees the scene and goes back to his off-campus apt. (can't keep guns/ammo on campus) where he goes totally over the edge and decides to take as many people as possible with him so grabs all his clips, ammo, etc, and another pistol and heads back to campus. He is probably an engineering major or had classes in Norris or the guy sleeping with his GF was an engineering student so he heads there to conduct his murderous rampage before committing suicide.
Option B: he knows about the cheating and shows up loaded up already. kills gf & guy, then sneaks around campus making his way to Norris for whatever reason.
Option C: shooter at the dorm and shooter at norris are two different people who went on coincidental killing sprees (i think unlikely)
terrible terrible incident i just find it incomprehensible that someone would attack so many innocent people

I feel really sorry for your loss. Did they release names or did you find out from family?
Bad news, sorry to hear it. Any other details?Originally posted by: Jawo

Me too. I just... I just can't comprehend it. Thirty two people.
I'm just sitting here and asking myself what I would do if I were there.

question:
some people are posting that their campus police carry guns as if it is something exceptional.
why should that be exceptional? why isn't it the norm? most state colleges these days have student bodies in excess of 10,000. that is a small town? why is it any more strange for campus police to carry guns than it would be for a town sheriff?

If you go to the school's website, they advise witnesses to go to the local police department, and not the campus police. That tells me that their campus police force can't be a fully staffed and functioning police force.
What that means, I don't know.
I've done this before.Originally posted by: Mill

Looking at my campus E-Mail the first time I got an E-Mail was at 9:26AM:
A shooting incident occurred at West Amber Johnston earlier this morning. Police are on the scene and are investigating.
The university community is urged to be cautious and are asked to contact Virginia Tech Police if you observe anything suspicious or with information on the case. Contact Virginia Tech Police at 231-6411
Stay attuned to the www.vt.edu. We will post as soon as we have more information.
At 9:50AM we got another E-Mail saying:
A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows
From that point on that means all classes were canceled and we weren't to leave the dorms. Those already in classes were supposed to be dismissed, but some professors kept their students for the entire time.
At the time, since it was before 10AM all doors were already locked to non-residents. We need to swipe our card to get access to the building. Despite this, people open the doors for others or just walk in in a crowd- Just being nice to people.
Hope I can clear things up as they present.

Kevin, interesting point that I was going to bring up. That's how it always was at our dorms, too. People would let other people in or walk in big groups. So, the card swipe security was almost useless if you had someone who was even decently logical or smart. They would just wait until someone who had their card was going in.

Well Campus police probably cannot handle everything. They probably each have their own tasks they are doing. Campus police might be heading up the actual investigation. I can tell you that most of the time anywhere around Campus I see campus police. There are a lot of them from what I see.

Horrifying and very sad.
I wonder if the students tried to overpower the gunman if he had only handgun(s).
