Good for you! You shouldn't change your plans because of one random incident that could just as easily happened at any school, workplace, or university in theis country. I'm proud that I went there and where my class ring all the time.

Anyone else sick of the media sensonalization of all of this? Call it the VT tragedy. Not a massacre. Have some damned respect.

I can just see all of the main editors at the news networks creaming their pants as they send their news vans to fight over the grief stricken students for the sakes of a couple of ratings points.

It is likely to have an effect on some individual's decisions. When the rapist at the University of Florida was in the news several years back, it had an affect on enrollment there. One of my former co-workers actually left Florida because of it (by dictate of her parents).

I hope all you VT people stay safe tonight. However unlikely it may be that the 2nd gunman is still out there, however unlikely it may be, I know would stay inside.

Im sincerely sorry for all your losses, and I hope tommorow you find out all your worries were unfounded when you find your friends well.

Sleep well. Good night.

Everyone is just nonsensical right now.
There are details about Columbine that are still sealed and witnesses/family members that are still under gag orders. I can understand not releasing names today while family members are being notified, but myself (along with most of the country) wants details of what happened in a timely manner.

With all the wild-ass/half-ass reporting that is the standard of today's instant media, I'm sure they are trying to figure out everything that about the shooter and what happened before they release anything for the media to continue their feeding frenzy over.

I dont know about this unless youve heard this from somewhere. You dont walk around campus with two pistols and extra ammo just in case someone threatens you. In my opinion he has this planned to some degree. Maybe he found out about it while at home and then did it but i dont think it was a instant idea. But then again...i just know what i know from the news.

It's easy to get a gun illegally, just as it's easy to get illegal drugs. If you're willing to murder people, I doubt that obeying the law is at the top of your priorities.

If you banned guns, those who are willing to obtain them illegally would still be able to get them, whereas the law abiding citizens would be disarmed.
Yeah, that's the argument the NRA makes and those sympathetic with their position -- i.e. all the millions of gun owners in the US who don't want to give up their guns. "If you make guns illegal, only outlaws will have guns."

Well, duh! The thing of it is that it will take a long time for this gun happy country to get over it. It won't happen in 2-3 years. It will take a generation for it to really start working, but it will work. You have to make it illegal (highly illegal) to have, distribute, manufacture, adapt, hide, smuggle, cache and use guns. The idea that you are safe because you have guns is trash.

According to NYTIMES.com, the guy, an Asian, was looking for his ex-girlfriend when he killed 2 people on one side of campus. He then went across to a German class and killed the rest before killing himself. He had a boy-scout type uniform and a black ammo vest.

Yeah, pass more laws, that always works. Look at the "war on drugs" with all those people in jail and people hardly ever use drugs any more.

Why do people think that passing more laws will change the way people behave? There is a law about murdering other people on the books and it didn't seem to deter the VT shooter.

At some point, you have to realize that banning firearms for private use is an impossible notion for the US. There is absolutely no way it would happen, for a hundred different reasons.

Gun control is the only reasonable political answer to this kind of situation, and even that is a stretch. Even if they reinstated the assault weapons ban, it wouldn't ban the types of semi-automatic 9mm pistols that the shooter likely used.

The only logical solution I see is stronger campus security, better security/lockdown policies and implementation. But even that won't stop a determined person bent on killing other humans.

Guns kill people. People also kill people. But the firearms industry in the US is a powerful, powerful force financially and politically. And the proliferation of firearms in our country is deep and far-reaching.

I'm sorry for all of those here who have lost any friends/family, i personally have not, thankfully. Although friends of friends have been lost which still hits home and makes the situation all more real. It's too bad something has to happen anywhere, especially at VT. The candlelight memorial tomorrow night should be quite the thing to see, there is an expected attendance of over 40 thousand students, staff, administrators and probably blacksburg citizens.

this isn't why they should reduce tuition but tuition is way too high. I used to work for a university and the amount of money wasted is ridiculous. Students are definitely getting screwed

Not at VaTech, tuition is not very high by many standards, in state it is relatively cheap and out of state is as well
