That Asian guy didn't have to do this. So what if his girl friend cheated on him, life isn't fair. I would expect more from him.

Edit: And Yongsta, maybe that is why China is limiting 3 hour of gaming per day.

But I contend that the mere prevalence of guns contributes to the pervasive violent ethos of America.
Maybe its just crappy parenting and the culture that parents let their kids grow up in? How are you going to disarm gangs who make their money selling already heavily completely banned goods? We can't keep them from getting cocaine but we can keep them from getting guns?

Its not as catchy as a song, but I could link you to countless studies showing somewhere between 800k - 2.5 million defensive uses of guns annually. Would you disarm those people? Remember we're talking about women protecting themselves from rapists, elderly protecting themselves from home invaders, mothers protecting children....guns are a tremendous equalizer of physical force and that is often needed.

banning guns will not do anything but hurt innocent people. IF this guy did not have a gun he would have used explosives (wich you can get far more easy then guns. but take some time).knives etc.

the guy was nuts. banning anything would not have mattered. people would have still died.

I would like to point out that school shootings do not happen in this country, where guns are tightly restricted to hunting and pest control.

Do they use explosives instead as you suggest? No they don't. These things just do not happen. Why is that do you think?

Because you British are civilized. Here in America, we are the first country to have gone from primitivism to decadence without having visited civilization.

I worked with Ryan as an RA last year. He was a great person and liked everyone. It's a huge loss and a waste of a good guy.

The human mind is a vast expanse of the unknown.

Who knows what makes one person simply depressed while another person in the same situation snaps into a psychotic rage?

We'd like to find something to blame; violence on TV/movies, video games, music, pornography, the parents, the gun industry, the bullies, the girlfriend...maybe there is a source of blame, maybe there is not.

Being Asian will have very little to do with the cause of this tragedy when all is said and done.

I thought Asian parents discipline their child strictly.

Let's be honest here, you know as much about Asian culture as my 5 year old nephew. It seems both of you were taught by watching the Rush Hour movies.

What does Rush Hour movies have to do with anything?

This incident makes a mockery of the people who defeated this bill last year:

http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/wb/xp-50658

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Lessons:

1) gun control doesn't work; people intent on doing harm will do it anyway
2) denying people the means to defend themselves and their peers makes them helpless victims
3) this person used two simple 9mm handguns, not AR15s, not AK47s, not Tec9s, or any kind of evil plastic ""high powered high capacity military style semiautomatic assault weapon with a bayonet attachment""; just two simple easily (illegally) concealed 9mm handguns

Lessons we repeat over and over and over again while we watch out fellow citizens get gunned down because some people just won't accept that threat of justified lawful gun violence is the only EFFECTIVE solution to criminal gun violence. Instead we will keep cutting away human rights, installing more metal detectors, making our lives more inconvenient, etc. And we gain nothing in return but continued and increased violence from murderers who now know where to go to find easy targets.

Completely relevant to the topic. Read the article, it even has to do with Virginia Tech.

I won't carry it further here however. I will double post in the other thread though, thanks.

We know it is relevant to the topic at hand, but a P&N thread has been started for this type of discussion. I saw this article posted earlier in this thread, and it got a similar response then due to the discussion breaking down to pro/anti gun/concealedcarry/etc...

Thank you for taking this discussion to the other thread.

MSNBC:

Shooter was not a student at Virginia Tech. Serial numbers on the handguns were "obliterated."

I somehow got the impression that he wasn't a student there. I think it will be a while before we find out who he was.
