A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Lessons:

1) gun control doesn't work; people intent on doing harm will do it anyway
2) denying people the means to defend themselves and their peers makes them helpless victims
3) this person used two simple 9mm handguns, not AR15s, not AK47s, not Tec9s, or any kind of evil plastic ""high powered high capacity military style semiautomatic assault weapon with a bayonet attachment""; just two simple easily (illegally) concealed 9mm handguns

Lessons we repeat over and over and over again while we watch out fellow citizens get gunned down because some people just won't accept that threat of justified lawful gun violence is the only EFFECTIVE solution to criminal gun violence. Instead we will keep cutting away human rights, installing more metal detectors, making our lives more inconvenient, etc. And we gain nothing in return but continued and increased violence from murderers who now know where to go to find easy targets.

how dare you present facts!!

The easiest way to keep this from happening is to get rid of the amendment that deals with the right to bear arms. This is no longer the right time or place to have that amendment, that was when citizens had to protect themselves from invders. But now, it has to be seen that the right to bear arms is not used to protect oneself but to inflict pain on others.

How about citizens who want to protect themselves from psycho gunmen (as opposed to "invders")? Do you not realize it's illegal to carry a gun inside VT even with a CCW permit? What good did the gun ban do?

A lot more than 33 people died to give us that right; I doubt 33 dead will take it away.

More evidence of gun motivating crime. It is long overdue that we repeal the 2nd amendment. another tragedy that could have been prevented if we didn't have the 2nd Amendment.

Dude. Go away. Now.

What is your problem. That is a tragedy. over 30 dead, because of guns.

How does that even make sense? An inanimate object caused all of this? SOmeone with issues and an agenda, with no regard to life, used a gun as a tool to carry out his plans. What if it were explosives? Or a vehicle? Ban all the semi's on the road because someone used one to kill someone else?

There is a saying, "When guns are outlawed, only criminals will have guns" - If I have to confront someone on the first floor of my home, do I have to jump in to the melee barehanded? Or call the cops from my bedroom and hope the bad guys don't make it upstairs?? Geez.

What is happening at VT is tragic. Guns are not the reason these people are gone, the person with the vendetta is. That person is to blame.
Typical thinking, or maybe I should say this is a very common argument used by people to counter gun control advocacy. But I contend that the mere prevalence of guns contributes to the pervasive violent ethos of America. "When you begin to think like a gun..." the song goes. Here's the lyrics (great song!):

John Cale's "Gun"

The quick try to get quicker
And the creepers get hung
Now it?s you that got wasted tonight on the job
One lost his liquor
And the other lost his hand

Ten sticky thumb prints on the door and the sink
But nothin? saw nothin? - just smell the stink
Five hundred mugshots and a hundred to one
Four forgotten and the rest just won?t come

When you?ve begun to think like a gun
The rest of the year has already gone
When you?ve begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone

(well) blood on the windows and blood on the walls
Blood on the ceiling and down in the halls
And the papers keep downing on everything I burned
And the people getting restless but they?ll never learn

I picked up a doctor - he?s good with a knife
Says anaesthetic?s a waste of his time
Works in a hurry but always worthwhile
Knows they won?t be back for a long long time

Top of the staircase was ready to fall
We were still waiting downstairs in the hall
Watch out for big mama, she?ll set you on fire
Or go for your neck with the chicken wire

When you?ve begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone
Once you?ve begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have already gone

Mother of plenty, mother of none
You?ve got me cornered and still on the run
I don?t care nothing about you anyway
Stuck in this hole I?m on my way

Yeah when you?ve begun to live like a gun
The days of the year have already gone
When you?ve begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone

You seem to be neglecting the fact the numbers from the department of justice to those from a FSU criminologist say guns are used defensively between 800,000 - 2,500,000 times a years. I certainly think that counts as protecting oneself.

I would also point out that the 2nd amendment doesn't specify invaders. It seems to be quite good for defense against invaders...a corrupt government.....crazed killers....perhaps its just as broad as your freedom of speech.

I am talking about taking guns away from everyone except law enforcement officers.

You must understand that while this is an emotional situation for many, many others have been victims or had friends that were victimized by other criminals. When people have been involved with either side of the gun control debate there are some very strong emotions that come to the surface after hearing of things like this.

Media is making me sick at the moment (some of it).

Taking that livejournal guy, and showing it, slandering him, making assumptions/badmouthing him on national news. Wow, pick some random asian guy who happens to like guns and scapegoat him hard, classy. Nevermind that the shooter is dead and the guy is obviously still updating his LJ.

Just irks the hell out of me. I look at those pictures and I see a normal asian guy who smiles a lot, hanging out with a lot of normal people, has an enthusiasm for guns, and is pretty literate/well-adjusted.

My friend is an EMT and he just came and we were talking. I didn't want to bring it up because I didn't want him to have to relive it, but he told me a few scenes and they were just absolutely horrific. Instances that I can't even imagine. I wish I could have done something more today instead of running around in the dorm

What indecision? Don't jump on the gun until you know the whole story. As of now, I don't think any of us really knows the whole story.

I feel for the victims too but wishing unemployment on the University president for something out of the range of his control is a bit extreme. This was a tragedy and couldn't have been reasonably expected.

Let's all be ignorant and start blaming TV and video games now. I'll bet the next 6-10 months will be debates and arguments on who to blame instead of remembering and mourning the victims.

Typical Americans.
