He didn't use an assult weapon though. It was a 9mm and a .22! Quite common handguns if you ask me.

These eyewitness accounts are just horrific. The convocation today will be so hard to be at - Keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers.

There's a vigil in about an hour (2PM EST) here at Duke as a gesture of solidarity. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Description:
As Jews worldwide honored on Monday the memory of those who were murdered in the Holocaust, a 76-year-old survivor sacrificed his life to save his students in Monday's shooting at Virginia Tech College that left 32 dead and over two dozen wounded.

Professor Liviu Librescu, 76, threw himself in front of the shooter, who had attempted to enter his classroom. The Israeli mechanics and engineering lecturer was shot to death, but all the students lived - because of him.

He blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee, Joe Librescu (his son) said in a telephone interview from his home outside of Tel Aviv. "Students started opening windows and jumping out."

Professor Librescu and his wife, immigrated to Israel from Romania in 1978 and then moved to Virginia in 1985 for his sabbatical, but had stayed since then.

Thanks to his heroic effort almost the whole class has survived.

Please spread the word, among your friends, about this great man.

They need to erect a statue of this man on the VT campus.

The guy may have been taking medication for depression, wrote creepy creative writing, started a fire in his dorm, and stalked some women. Wow.

I agree - there should be a statue for this man. What a hero.. Could you imagine blocking a door to allow others to getaway knowing the possibility of you getting killed? Simply amazing.. God bless this man.. RIP

30:1 KD ratio. Multple HS. Now granted they were mostly unarmed bots, probably a few afks, but somehow I knew the killer was south korean.

I can't believe I used to take shortcuts through that building on the really cold days back when I was there. it will never be the same. I hate the fact that that place of all places is going to be the center of a gun control/security debate even though the core issue was a deeply distubed individual whom nobody saw coming. Its was just a matter of time before someone pulled the violent video game card. VT needs closure and doesn't need to be the center of political grandstanding.

If you look around you can find the girls myspace, along with pictures of the bottom two.

not posting it here unless its ok.

EDIT: sorry if this has been posted already, i didnt look through all the last few pages.

Weird. I lived on the 4th floor of West AJ my freshman year at Tech. And the shooter is from Centerville, where I live. The police are probably descending in droves on my town. Very strange.

This is just incredibly sad. I just looked at Emily Hilscher's myspace page and this whole situation just seems so terribly wrong and unnecessary.

So much pain for so many people.

To the best of my understanding (from first-hand accounts) this all started with an ex-boyfriend finding his girlfriend in bed with another guy. He then shot them, killing the guy immediately and the girl died at RMH.
Crime of passion and insanity.

Doesn't make sense... it would mean he had his gun with him when he went to visit his gf on campus. Also, the way he went about it... it seemed like he planned everything out -- the various clips, the vest... etc

--> He had horrific action on his mind but he didn't have it scripted. That's why it took him 2 hours to go from crime scene 1 to crime scene 2, at most a 10 minute walk. He was trippin' and I don't mean drugs.

Yep. I don't think he'd be casually carrying around two 9mms on campus. Plus, crimes of passion don't usually turn into a mass killing.
Thing is, they can and do and in this modern world with semi and automatic handguns and assault weapons around the 2nd Ammendment is an anachronism. Back in the days they drafted and ratified that no single person could just walk into a crowded space and systematically annihilate everybody one by one. If he/she had 2-3 guns, he/she would have to stop and reload and everybody would rush and stop the menace. Today, we need to put a stop to this stuff. We need to very severely limit access to these weapons by whatever means are necessary.

Check out this South Korean news site main page:
Headline image

Check out the story link here: Link

Commenting on reports that the killer was Asian, Lee said it was unlikely to have been Korean since few Korean students have weapons due to the difficulty of obtaining a gun license.

Oh, the irony!

Such a sad day!

Chicago Sun-Times on the "disturbing note"

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The suspected gunman in the Virginia Tech shooting rampage, Cho Seung-Hui, was a troubled 23-year-old senior from South Korea who investigators believe left an invective-filled note in his dorm room, sources say.

The note included a rambling list of grievances, according to sources. They said Cho also died with the words "Ismail Ax" in red ink on one of his arms.

Cho had shown recent signs of violent, aberrant behavior, according to an investigative source, including setting a fire in a dorm room and allegedly stalking some women.

A note believed to have been written by Cho was found in his dorm room that railed against "rich kids," "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus.

Cho was an English major whose creative writing was so disturbing that he was referred to the school's counseling service, the Associated Press reported.

Professor Carolyn Rude, chairwoman of the university's English department, said she did not personally know the gunman. But she said she spoke with Lucinda Roy, the department's director of creative writing, who had Cho in one of her classes and described him as "troubled."

"There was some concern about him," Rude said. "Sometimes, in creative writing, people reveal things and you never know if it's creative or if they're describing things, if they're imagining things or just how real it might be. But we're all alert to not ignore things like this."

She said Cho was referred to the counseling service, but she said she did not know when, or what the outcome was.

WTH is Ismail Ax?

Wow. This is hard to digest.

I just saw the cell phone video of the shootings. The shots in the background are jarring. I can't help but think that on every one of those shots, someone inside that building was possibly dying. Makes it very hard to watch.

The video will almost certainly be shown over and over again on TV. Let's not forget the fact that what we are seeing/hearing on that video are the sounds of young kids dying. Maybe not right in front of our eyes, but almost so. Helps keep things in perspective.

To all the posters from VT who have checked in, glad to hear you are all ok. And to those who lost a friend, I cannot possibly imagine how you feel. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Great. Some clinically insane Asian male is going to ruin college for all of us

We are all going to have to deal with it...

<--applying next year.

1 out of 1.3 billion+ is not a bad track record

There are only 1.3 billion Asians?

1.3 billion Chinese plus 800+ million Indians + 200 million Indonesian + ~150milllion Japanese... and you keep going...

Anyways, please. The stereotype that we're all damn nerds will still stand. I wouldn't be worried about public opinion so much on this one.

The guy lived in the US since '92 (heard it on news in the morning).

So he's not an exchange student, and was probably working towards his citizenship.
