I'm quite surprised that now all schools make it a big issue about broadcasting emergencies.

Don't univerisites have PA systems? I'm sure we have that in all our HSes, and I understand the argument that Universities are huge, but I can assure you that where there are buildings, you can get PA systems.

I'm going to quote from MSNBC:

At UC Berkeley, Celaya says an extreme emergency would warrant, among other things, a siren on an outdoor public address system followed by an announcement with instructions.

I'm glad our school does have an emergency system, which is most likely designed for earthquakes because the east edge of campus rests on the fault line and runs right through our stadium. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't activate the sirens and PA system in an event like this. Moreoever, if you have a shooting, don't you think cops would be all over campus? Even if it's just 1 murder. I guess it's because we're near Oakland, and you expect a huge response in events like this, but yea.

Now we'll see this whole hype about CAMPUS SECURITY just like airport security. But get this, campus is JUST LIKE THE CITY. If a shooting starts in Oakland, what's going to happen? Do you expect a ****** PA system to go off to warn all citizens who wanna go to Chinatown? Please. Now schools are going to spend MILLIONS on things like automated phone-call machines to warn students, revamped email systems, blah blah blah. Just install sirens and a damn PA please. Even a fire alarm would work. Or better yet, just get cops on the scene ASAP.

I dont know a fire alarm would have the exact opposite reaction that they wanted. It would cause everyone to run outside into the hallways and into the open parts of campus where the guy could just unload on everyone. I agree tho...i think most campuses should have some sort of PA system and I think most places do atleast in buildings.

No disrespect, but as long as we stand around crying, wearing ribbons, and singing sappy songs, this kind of thing will keep happening.

Buy something other than flowers and take your communities back into your own hands.

If shooting a murderer in the act in self defense is "taking the law into your own hands", then so is stopping at a stop sign when there isn't a officer explicitly telling you to stop.

I wonder if they will publish his suicide note?

How much do you think his disturbing creative writings will sell for on ebay?

When is the movie?

What does standing up and banding together effectively in our communities in the face of crime have to do with religious lunatics killing innocent people in lawless societies and wanting to conquer the world?

Seriously, this is not appropriate, I for one don't think you belong in the AnAndTech community and vote for a perm ban.

It is funny but your ahead of your time. If you said that in a year or so when everyone has settled you would probably get mostly LOL about it.

I would agree with Karma Police. Living in East AJ, I know that people rarely left their rooms for fire drills....especially if its not the first one. Worse case...they shooter could be waiting for people to run out like what happened in Padduch, Ky a fdew years ago.

I am getting sick and tired of the media spin saying the President Steger didn't do enough. He did all he could and wanted to keep the people safe. Locking down the dorms might have caused many fatalities in AJ, or Harper or Cochrane, or wherever else the shooter went. Its a lose/lose situation.

Now I can be sarcastic at times, but that is just uncalled for. People actually died, its not a video game...you are prepetuating the stupid myths that video games cause things like this to happen. I hope the mods look into perma banning you :disgust::Q

I honestly think it's going to get to a point in society where you need to keep a handgun on you at all times. I know that may sound silly, but even if you enforce gun control, if someone wants to commit acts like Virginia Tech, they are going to do it. No one is going to be able to stop it. So how many of you have thought on the flip side of this? What if the RA in the dorm had a weapon of his own and was trained to use it?? Might sound crazy at the initial thought, but the more I think about it, I wouldn't mind at all if the RA of the floor I live on in my residence hall had a permit to carry a hand gun and had proper training. Just something to think about.. Who knows, instead of one innocent person dieing, there could have been one potential gunman killed before he was able to carry out his plans.

Yeah, it's better to have everyone in society armed, so every drunken barfight becomes a gunfight, every disagreement between neighbors becomes a shootout, and every domestic dispute becomes a dead spouse. Yeah, what better way to end the one in a million acts of random gun violence like VT than to just make gun violence so common it's not random anymore, problem solved!

Prof Livu Librescu sacrificed himself to save his students by barricading himself against the door.
I had a class taught by him many years ago and seeing his kind face on the news as one of the victim is just a complete shock.
RIP

Looks like we have a real genius here.

Explain how a 9mm Glock and a .22 caliber plinking handgun are assault weapons? Both are semi-auto, both require little more than a drivers license to purchase in most states.
