unbelievable society we've got here.

Don't take the actions of a single random sick individual and use that as the yard stick for an entire society.

This kind of thing seems to be happening more and more though...

Its been a long time since we had any school shootings. I don't recall ever having a shooting like this on a college campus before.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawson_College_Shooting

is just one. i seeme to remember 2 others at diffrent college's.

That one was Canada. Thought we were talking just about USA.

If you're talking about "society," Canada is as much a part of American culture as California and Texas are. The only distinction between Canada and the US is their adamant insistence that there is a distinction.

Keep your thoughts/prayers with those affected by this tragedy.

Glad to hear you're OK.

Worst school disaster in US history. Guns weren't used, though.

LOL, oh my god, please explain how everyone involved having a weapon in this instance would have resulted in *less* shootings? Seems to me that a bunch of jumpy students with firearms might well have turned the whole thing into a massacre. Or are you suggesting it's ok for more people to get shot as long as one of them is the guy who started it?

he is not saying everybody. all that is needed is for the possiblity that somebody will have a firearm - it is called deterrence and has kept this and the world safe from nuclear wars since the devices were invented, only 1 example (x2 bombs) were needed to show that we don't wnat to use that power on anybody or have it used on us. the same thing with said gunner - if he is at a school there is little chance anybody will have a weapon that is on equal ground with a firearm, so he has free reign. if there was the knowledge that other people may have a firearm, said shooter would possibly rethink his decision. if he still go along with it, there is a good chance somebody will at the training required to get a ccw permit will drop him, or at least wound him before others are taken out like with no thought of an encounter.

Agreed. If the population were armed, it wouldn't have gotten to the point where all the students were that crazy in the first place.

aren't campus police armed?

It depends on the university, but in general, yes. You have to figure that there are VERY few police officers or armed security within 60 seconds of where you are. That sixty seconds is crucial. This is where CCW comes in.

WTF!!! When I left home this morning, I heard over the news that there was only 1 dead, and 18 injured, and they had one suspect in custody.

Now it's 21 dead, and also the shooter was killed?! ARG??

i know ASU's campus police are armed - basically just like a regular cop. i think even a lot of the commuity college's our here have armed school security/police.

FoxNews article is reporting that the shooter is dead.

The thing that bothers me about that article is:

Police also said there is no evidence the two shootings at opposite ends of campus were related.

That would tend to imply two different shooters who just happened to snap on the same day. If police claim no one in custody, and one shooter dead, where is the other one?

I think that is a screwup from continually updating the article as events unfold. Latest I heard was that it was just one shooter.

Still, I have a hard time grasping how a someone with a vest full of ammo and gun(s) can walk all the way across a 2600 acre campus without anyone stopping him.

aren't campus police armed?

Probably, but how often are campus police actually ON campus? I mean, 99% of the time, campus police are making drinking busts in the dorms. I don't even know if the campus police could find campus in a pinch, never mind be there in time to stop an enraged gunman.

Gun bill gets shot down by panel
HB 1572, which would have allowed handguns on college campuses, died in subcommittee.

By Greg Esposito
381-1675

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill's defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Del. Dave Nutter, R-Christiansburg, would not comment Monday because he was not part of the subcommittee that discussed the bill.

Most universities in Virginia require students and employees, other than police, to check their guns with police or campus security upon entering campus. The legislation was designed to prohibit public universities from making "rules or regulations limiting or abridging the ability of a student who possesses a valid concealed handgun permit ... from lawfully carrying a concealed handgun."

The legislation allowed for exceptions for participants in athletic events, storage of guns in residence halls and military training programs.

Last spring a Virginia Tech student was disciplined for bringing a handgun to class, despite having a concealed handgun permit. Some gun owners questioned the university's authority, while the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police came out against the presence of guns on campus.

In June, Tech's governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities.

Armed society is a polite society...this idiot would be dropped in 2 seconds had people been allowed to carry...that - or he would not have done it in the first place because he would know he'd get himself killed first.

Yes, and every year there would be a sh!tload more shooting on campuses across the country because a guy was upset he got an "F" and he already had a gun right there in his backpack.

Breaking news is always screwed up. I remember during Columbine they said there was three shooters. On 9/11 everything was a total mess. Reports of planes going down on the West Coast. Bombs in the DC mall, etc.

People given permits to carry usually aren't that unstable.

Jesus...

It's easy to see irony after the fact. However, I think many people would have agreed with her comments at the time.
