I think part of the reason his situation got so much press was the slow news week last week. Obviously the VT story is one that will dominate the headlines for a while (unless, God forbid, something even worse happens).

Gun bill gets shot down by panel

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Jesus...

It's easy to see irony after the fact. However, I think many people would have agreed with her comments at the time.

Actually her comments make no ****** sense. As someone who does not own a gun, I would feel safer knowing that there are people out there with CC permits.

Banning guns makes it UNSAFE for a law abiding citizen and gives criminals superiority.

They said that the lockdown was lifted then the second happened.

Officially the deadliest also.

ATF on the way.

I'm watching CNN Pipeline, they are interviewing students.
Seems like there was another incident last year or something.

The deadliest school massacre happened back in the 1920's. Someone bombed a school.

As a gun owner, I have never agreed with banning guns from law abidding citizens... there are a lot of people like me.. there are even a few in Virginia... How many of these students could have been saved if the students were armed themselve? Who knows?

News reports indicated that the gunman used two 9mm handguns to carry out the shootings before turning a gun on himself.

I'd rather see this thread not devolve into a political debate, but I will say that, although I am a gun owner, I don't know that allowing guns on a college campus is a good idea. People that age are somewhat emotionally fragile, and there is a ton of drug and alcohol use among college students - consider the number of fistfights at frat parties, etc., and what might happen if every party included a handful of drunks with guns. I fully understand reasonable minds may differ on this topic, but I think more guns on campus would cause more problems than it would solve.

After that, it sounds like more people were killed. Was there a second shooter, did they have the wrong person in custody, did they have noone in custody, or what?

I believe the additional deaths are those who were reported as injured earlier.

I think it's more likely that the incident has pulled him away from a terminal where he can update us. It might be a while before he gets to a place (and state of mind) to check in.

I would agree.
There is also a much higher chance that a licensed weapon could end up in unlicensed hands in a university.

Link - supposed post from a VaTech frat listserv

Zach just got back and he told us his story. he can tell u the details better but he deserves to be recognized immediately. He was in norris hall and heard the gunshots comign from down the hall. while others hid in the class room zach got up and got a few others to help him baracade the door with desks. He could hear the gunman coming down the hall opening doors n firing into class rooms. Zach then saw his door handle turn and the gun man tried to get in but zach slammed the door back shut, others then got up to help, trying to hold the door shut with desks. zach then said he heard the the gunman reload a new magazine and fired two shots directly through the door, luckily didnt hit anybody. the gunman then gave up an continued down the hall

Exactly. A firearm in the hands of someone trained to use it is very effective, and much safer than a nutjob running around shooting people. Someone posted it earlier - it would be a better (still not a "good") situation if someone was CCW, and was able to subdue or take out the shooter before too many more people were killed.
