He was the nicest guy you could ever meet...so laid back and easy going.....

I was just watching MSNBC, and they reported that the RA was female.

I heard that as well....but I heard this from several friends...and on the news three bodies had been identified.

On the other hand, hiding under a desk is going to get you killed.

It?s time for students to be taught to defend themselves when faced with a situation like this.

Group psychology hinders collective action IMO. Unless they can communicate and formulate even the most basic plan of action, we can only guess how they should react.
Who knows- killing someone initially probably shocked and paralyzed everyone there.
Also, the class layout, chairs, exits, windows- a few jumped out to escape. Much easier to say they should have acted as one when we're just armchair analysts.

As long as their wasn't extreme negligence on the part of the school, I really hope no lawsuits come out of this. With the high death toll it seems likely there will be.

Like I speculated earlier, from the student accounts he went from classroom to classroom. He had an angle advantage in that he was facing everyone with nobody at his back. By leaving the room and moving to the next, the victims who had just been shot were given a sense of security and stayed in the room, not daring to go in the hallway. This allowed to shooter to repeat the process in other rooms.

At least that what it sounds like.. it is the only explanation I can come up with for how a guy with two pistols could cause so much damage.

I can almost guarantee lawsuits, especially with the way the media is spinning the campus response after the first shooting.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan this year through one of my friends who was his resident in West AJ. I saw him pretty much every day in passing while walking to my friend's room. We didn't get a chance to talk too much but once in a while he'd pop by my friend's room just to chat a bit. He's definitely a great guy and I can't get over the fact that I won't see him again.

Uh yeah, I sure as heck wouldn't attack an armed gunman, maybe if you overwhelm him you win, but the people further away are DEFINITELY gonna run, so if only the people up front attack they will be gunned down. Since their "backup" is gonna get out while they still can. Suggesting unarmed people attack and armed assailant is probably not a good idea. Even if they were well trained and working together it is questionable if more would die attacking than running. IF the are a bunch of scared kids you can bet that they will almost certainly do not good unless they get lucky. There is no way they could know that the person would kill 20 more people that they may or may not have been able to prevent. Best to just get the hell out and let the people with guns deal with it.

Hey guys, just popping in to let you guys know I am ok. It was very scary here on campus for a while- especially since I live on first floor.

To put things in perspective, I am in Pritchard East. Ambler Johnston is the next dorm over from us. After that we heard about the rampage at Norris Hall which is across campus from the residence halls. From then on we had various reports. At one point police stormed the tennis courts across the road from us and we had to tape our blinds shut, and get out of our rooms into the halls.

It is sad that VT will now have the distinguished honor of the worst schools shooting in history. Keep us in your prayers everyone.

Really glad to hear you're okay, Kevin. I didn't hear about this until near the end of the school day and then remembered that you go there. Came to ATOT to see if you were posting and was getting a little worried after going through 28 pages before seeing your username. Take care of yourself and your friends through this.

It's a horrible day for the many friends and families of those killed, and for those injured.

I apologize for my remark at the beginning of the thread. I did not know the full extent of the situation and looking back I realize it was a callous thing to say. I hope everyone is ok. There is someone I know who is missing and I'm hoping that he is ok.

there's a bunch of facebook pics going around of the guy, girl, and weapons. anyone know if these are genuine?

Link?

false alarm
not this guy

I can confirm 100% that this is not the guy. He actually works at my company and i can see him online, heh. I think it's safe to assume the any myspace/livejournal/whatever links that float around are going to be just pure conjecture until the police give an identification through the media.

I was going to post something about how you had just made the biggest ass of yourself in ATOT history seeing as 32 of your classmates had just been slaughtered...but then you apologized...kinda puts me in an awkward position now.

"Two guns believed to be involved in the Virginia Tech massacre are being sent to a lab for testing, a federal law enforcement official says."

Developing story on CNN. I really hope this is just media BS and the situation hasn't turned to looking for scapegoats, i.e. who sold him the guns, why wasn't there enough campus police, why do violent video games drive corrupt our children, blah blah blah. This is a terrible tragedy and the only person to blame is the fvcked up individual that shot those students.

This is a sad day in US history, for sure.

Glad you are OK. Hope you find your friend safe.

You are part of a sad day indeed.

It also shows the speed at which history unfolds and is documented now.

I don't know if anyone posted this yet, but I just heard on Countdown with Keith Olbermann that the same gunman may have been the one who called in the previous two bomb threats. The motive is that he was trying to test the school's response time to a crisis.

Hmmmmm....

Interesting theory. If true I wonder about the "person of interest" they keep talking about and how they refuse to link the two shootings. I wonder if they might be seperate things. Hmm.
