Looks like we have a real genius here.

Explain how a 9mm Glock and a .22 caliber plinking handgun are assault weapons? Both are semi-auto, both require little more than a drivers license to purchase in most states.

Or, you could read my earlier response to this initial post for more clarity on my comment.

I was watching it on the HokieSports link...and I bet it was better actually being there!

He didn't use an assult weapon though. It was a 9mm and a .22! Quite common handguns if you ask me.

ya, that's what I heard too. I'm commenting on the posts about the guns he owned...(as is my understanding of those links). such evidence will certainly find its way to congress

those links to wayne chiang ARE NOT pics of the shooter. they are pics of another asian guy that people were speculating was the shooter yesterday.

gotcha. I thought they were the shooter's guns though. as the earlier pic I saw, (which was also claimed as not being the actual shooter), don't match this guy's who is attributed to the gun collection.

Okay, I don't know if anyone answered this. Was the S/N on those guns filed off before or after they were purchased?
After. The gun dealer had records and details of the sale; you don't keep records for the authorities if you're selling a gun with filed off serial numbers.
Yep, and filing the serial numbers off of a firearm is a federal offense.. not that this guy was terribly worried about the law.

I'm just curious as to why he would bothered to file the S/Ns off if he had planned to off himself anyway. Unless that was not his original plan.

Wouldn't the 'nutjobs' be able to buy one of the few hundred million existing firearms on the black market?

Nobody knows the exact number, but there are upwards of 200 million firearms in the US, and that increases by 5 million each year.

How do you eliminate something so revered, so deeply rooted, and so prevalent? You can't.

Yes, it's on Hokiesports.com. Giovanni's speech is about 50 minutes in.

So if they find out this kid was playing Starcraft, will they go back to trying to ban first person shooters ??

Solitaire ..... played by mass murderers everywhere !!!

Neighbor interviewed by police after serial killer is caught: "Ohh, he was such a quiet fellow ... never bothered anyone. I would never have thought he was capable of something like this !!"
Media reporter: "Well, there you have it, another loner caught up in his own world ... playing Solitaire and gaining the knowledge and skills that trained him how to kill ... and shoot the moon as well". "Back to you, Bryant".

They're going to ban violent/controversial writing, especially for students who are english majors.

They just did an interview with the brother and sister of Reema Samaha, one of the victims killed in Norris.

Such a waste. She was a looker too. 18 years young.

No disrespect, but as long as we stand around crying, wearing ribbons, and singing sappy songs, this kind of thing will keep happening.

Buy something other than flowers and take your communities back into your own hands.

Yeah, it's better to have everyone in society armed, so every drunken barfight becomes a gunfight, every disagreement between neighbors becomes a shootout, and every domestic dispute becomes a dead spouse. Yeah, what better way to end the one in a million acts of random gun violence like VT than to just make gun violence so common it's not random anymore, problem solved!

I have more weapons and ammunition than the local SWAT team could ever figure out how to use, I always carry a handgun, etc. I get into normal disputes with normal people all the time. Drawing my weapon will only occur when life is unjustly threatened.

Sorry, but no gunfights to report, and I even live in Arizona shock and surprise.

In fact I find that being armed with a deadly weapon makes me more rational and likely to cause me to avoid escalating a trivial dispute, that in the grand scheme of things, means absolutely nothing.

Doesn't mean everyone else has to carry or will carry, the point is calm and cool people like me who are capable of taking control of a situation like this are denied the ability to do so. I agree with everyone else here saying that schools are no place for guns... but I would carry mine in my book bag every single day if I had a legal avenue of doing so. It may just be your wife or kid who makes it out alive next time.

You're completely failing to realize that the majority of people are not emotionally stable enough to handle themselves like you, or I.

People in general, ARE NUTS. People get drunk at bars, and then where is their self control? Not in the bar, I can tell you that much.

People do not DESERVE guns, they can't even handle not getting into fights in the first place.

Oh I agree, but people are going to be stupid no matter what the law says or what you or I say. So why limit my options and further eliminate what little sanity remains in this country?

I'd say the majority of people are nuts because they get away with minor things all their lives without consequences until they pull something big like this VT shooting. All because our kids are indoctrinated in public schools starting with grade K that all violence is wrong no matter what and we aren't even allowed to defend ourselves, that private property is wrong, that everybody is special, everybody deserves everything, nobody ever gets left out, everybody is fair and equal, etc. A young mind molded with those expectations is dangerously unprepared for the real world of rejection, failure, consequences, etc.

We as a society, parents, gun owners, teachers, *everybody*, have forgotten how to say "NO". Some of this is laziness. Some of it is because we are all too busy and its more convenient. Some of it sadly is calculated political agenda using our courts and education systems to engage in a long term violence free socialist revolution in America. All of them are equally guilty for causing the problems we have today.

Counseling, therapy, etc, are all good first steps at preventing some people from going nuts, but all the counseling in the world will achieve nothing if we don't acknowledge that it is not the only solution, and that it fails to catch everyone.

Think about it this way: relax the concealed gun laws, and allow everyone to carry, meaning the sane, rational people as well as the nutjobs. At least the rational cool people are there to take control once the nutjobs pop offf a few. Meaning: casualties are minimum.

Or: No one can carry guns. The rational cool people, or the nutjobs. When the nutjobs go off, no one gets shot (injured maybe, but certainly not shot to death). The rational cool people are there to pound them into the ground, and still--limiting death.

Relaxed gun laws: Minimal casualties (one might hope)
No guns: little to no casualties.

Isn't the latter the most sensible option?

a) 1+1 = 2
b) 1+2 = 2

I like b) better, isn't it the most sensible option?

I too *wish* we lived in a world where people weren't murdered. Wishing doesn't save lives.

You make it sound so easy. You simply assume that a written statement on paper will magically make all the weapons in the world vanish in a cloud of pixie dust right of your everyones hands. Even if that were to happen, people intent on causing harm to others will invent new tools, weapons, and methods for doing so. Denying others who are less invention and less scheming an adequate means to properly escalate to much such threats is suicidal to society.

Cho's Roommate
Mr. Grewal recalled how earlier in the year someone running for a student council position visited the suite to pass out candy and ask for votes. Mr. Cho would not even make eye contact with him, turning his head away and refusing to make conversation?

?I would notice a lot of times, I would come in the room and he would kind of be sitting at his desk, just staring at nothing,? he said.

More
It was 5:30 Monday morning and Karan Grewal was finishing a break after a long night of cramming for his classes at Virginia Tech. As he left the bathroom at Harper Hall, his dormitory mate, Cho Sueng-Hui, wearing boxer shorts and a T-shirt, entered for his morning ritual of applying lotion, inserting his contact lenses and taking his medication.

?He was, like, normal,? Grewal, a 21-year-old accounting major, said today, describing the ordinary start to what turned out to be an extraordinary day?

According to school officials, Cho even had time to post a deadly warning on a school online forum.

?im going to kill people at vtech today,? they said he wrote.

Cho's Classmates
?His writing, the plays, were really morbid and grotesque,? Derry noted. ?I remember one of them very well. It was about a son who hated his stepfather. In the play the boy threw a chain saw around, and hammers at him. But the play ended with the boy violently suffocating the father with a rice krispy treat,? [Stephanie] Derry said.

?He even wrote one play about students being stalked by a teacher.? Derry said.

?I mean, his kind of writing was pretty peculiar, but when we asked him if he had any comments after we?d reviewed his work, he would just shrug and say nothing,? Derry described.

?We made jokes around the class about his work, because it was just so fictional, so surreal, we just had to laugh,? Derry said, ?We had to laugh because it couldn?t ever be real or truthful, I mean who throws hammers or chainsaws around??

?But we always joked we were just waiting for him to do something, waiting to hear about something he did,? Derry said. ?But when I got the call it was Cho who had done this, I started crying, bawling.?

I just heard a good point being made on the news.

Even in a combat zone, it's hard for most people (even soldiers) to fire so many bullets into other people and continue doing so at a high rate.

Seeing bullets tear through a person right in front of you, the blood, the horror...a normal person's mind would have shut down to deal with the situation.

This guy must have been in a total haze to have been able to do this to others.

Whats wrong with not liking the story headlines? IMHO, CNN is trying to beat out FoxNews for worst coverage of this event!

I really wish they'd stop plastering this scumbags face all over the media. It will only encourage copycats to get their 15 minutes of post-mortum fame.

No haze required.

I don't see what the problem is. People bleed when bullets pass through their bodies, shock and awe. So horrible I know, that we are made of squishy tissue that requires oxygen carrying blood. What do people expect to happen?

But then again I don't get people that can't handle an anatomy course without feeling icky... so... thats just me. Maybe I should have been a SEAL... or a Doctor...? Hmm

He single-handedly perpetrated the deadliest shooting in US history. He's getting more than just 15 minutes, trust me.

Nothing wrong with not liking the story headlines, but there is something wrong with misinterpreting the story headline to be blaming rich kids. The headline is reporting a fact, it is not editorializing. GTaudiophile's comment was absurd.

Think a shooting and 32 deaths are bad and reason to blame guns for all of societies problems? Yea it sucks that this happened, but blaming a material object for what this man did is just as insane as he was.

Consider this imaginary nightmare scenario: covertly locking all the doors, barring all the windows the night before, disabling the fire suppression systems and alarms, and methodically setting fires to the building for maximum spread with pre-cached ignition sources. And many of the materials and fuels probably wouldn't even be questioned in an engineering department. Cause a diversion on the major roadway access points to cause auto accidents during rush hour to deprive fire crews of timely access with vehicles and equipment for several blocks . By the time anyone knew what was going on they would all be trapped in a burning building with no escape. No gun, not even a knife, and by the time it all goes down, you could be long gone and not have to blow your own brains out when the police arrive. And not even a person with a concealed gun would be able to do anything about it. Recipe for a war zone and nightmare scenario, and no gun required.

If you think the sight of a little blood is horrific, try the smell of burnt flesh and the sound of a hundreds people screaming as their blood boils and their face turns to charcoal while they are still breathing.

How many hundreds of lives would be lost in this situation and how much property damage would be caused? What inanimate object would you blame for this? Matches? Wood?

Do not underestimate the power of the human mind intent on doing evil. People, and nothing else, has been the problem since man started bashing each others skulls in with femurs.

Don't be brainwashed just because every time you here the word 'crime' on TV you see a picture of a gun and handcuffs. fvking propagandists, the leftist media. They could have a 5 min snippet on 'crime' having to do with welfare fraud and jaywalking, and they will have a icon with a gun and a 'no smoking sign' on it on the screen every time they say 'crime' and the mass media sheeple apparently have bought it judging by some of the comments I have observed since this incident occurred.

I think we could do a lot of good in this country if we started by throwing away our TVs.. not the screen, and not even movies on DVD or video games, just the network television sewer pipes.

Thanks for the links Queasy, very informative.

I wonder if he snapped due to parental pressure? One of the articles indicated that his sister graduated from Princeton. I wonder his parents were down on him for being not as successful as his sibling. He also said something about majoring in business even though he is majored in English.
