I take my car to get an oil change and I said I wanted this basic, cheap oil change. I get home and I was looking at the receipt and it was noted "Customer declined new oil filter" or something along those lines. What the hell is this crap? I suppose it's my own fault for not asking what exactly came with the basic oil change, but I would figure it would have an oil filter and cheap oil.

Wow, they could have at least thrown in a cheap filter for that price.

A lot of people that go to Wal-Mart are *very* price conscience, usually because they have to be. So it sounds like "basic" oil change really means just an oil change. I wouldn't worry about the filter. It should be fine for a couple of changes unless your engine is either brand new, or maybe really old/high mileage. And I'd think leaving a decent filter is better than putting on a cheap filter that could blow out.

It does come with an oil filter, it was probably a communications error where the tech understood what you said as "just the oil change nothing else" as don't touch the oil filter do do a cursory inspection.

haha, what a rip! Midas by me charges just under $20 for 6 quarts of cheap oil and a cheapy oil filter. I didn't realize they use short filters. I had an OEM for the minivan out on the weekend and it's at least 50% longer. I had only gone to the cheap place because an OEM filter is $6.50 and the GTX oil is about $16, plus I need to put the car up, but I think I'll go that route from now on since I know it will at least be done properly.

I would never take a vehicle to walmart for service. I can get an oil change at the dealership for $26 and I actually bought 3 oil changes for $59 so it works out the same as what wallyworld is charging. I just drop my car off and ride my bike to work from the dealership. If they fuck something up at least I have some recourse. Good luck getting walmart to accept blame for something they screw up.

BTW-Lexus charges $130 for an oil change. They do a few other things along with that but basically, you're paying $130 every 5k miles for an oil change.

My motorcycle costs $150 for every 3000 mile service.

Go back and get your filter. Looks like you paid for one and didn't get it. They shouldn't object.

I'd rather change just the oil filter, than just changing the oil.

OP,

Live and learn. You should be fine for a while with JUST an oil change. Next time pay for a full change (to include filter) or do it yourself. If you have an Autozone near you they have great monthly specials on conventional and synthetic oil (to include filter).

You need a jack to do an oil change? How fat are you?

I've never changed the oil in a car that didn't need to be jacked up first. On my miata the car was too low to the ground to even get my shoulder under there let alone my head, and with my sister's accord the oil filter must be removed from the bottom. No way in hell anyone could fit under the car to change the filter without the car being raised.

I use ramps though, much more convenient.

WTF, you don't do your own at that price?

There are a lot of things that need to be checked, lubed, and adjusted every 3000 miles. Not the least of which is the chain (not that that's overly difficult). Motorcycles aren't the same as a car.

I guess people come in all shapes and sizes, because I've never had to jack up a car to change the oil either. And every car I've owned the filter came off from the bottom.
