It has been a while since I heard that old chestnut. Better minds have coalesced around the call for the best players from each country interested in participating, whether amateur, pro or my aunt Matilda. Without the NHL players, the hockey competition this time around does not have the cachet of other sports but It doesn't matter since Canada has proved to have the best players at the last two Olympics and nothing has changed .Why rub it in ?

Agreed. I heard an NHL broadcaster the other day mentioning that the hockey tournament won't decide which country is the best for hockey, because the best players are not playing, but that is horseshit. Obviously, if your second or third-best players are still kicking everyone's ass, that's a much better indication that your country is better than anyone else. The skill in each game isn't as great, but I think it's a better indicator of that country's product than watching the international pros that always play against each other, anyway.

Yeah, fine, Canada's scrubs are better than our scrubs and Russians scrubs are better than our scrubs and hell, for all we know, Gambia's scrubs might be better than our scrubs. There is not the slightest doubt that Canada's depth is 1000 times better than ours. The point is who cares whose scrubs can beat other scrubs? This is retirees and AHL washouts and college freshman against guys who play in the Swedish developmental league and the Burkina Faso Saturday night coed floor hockey mixer at the YMCA. It's not good hockey.

Honestly the woman's hockey games were way more entertaining. Never thought I would say that.

yes but years of shitty amatuer sports are worth it when it makes gems like USA v Russia in 1980 possible. The entire history of pro players vs other pro players in every annual international competition (like the summer European hockey championships) aren't ever going to be as good as a single game where scrubs take on a team full of Ivan Dragos and beat them.

Just tied with Germany on 2 man bobsleigh. Meanwhile we scored 2 more goals against Russia. Doing good today.

TBH I have not really been following it as much as I normally do, kind of catching bits here and there.

What made 1980 special is that a bunch of college kids beat a professional juggernaut. That was the very best team that the USSR could field and they got beat by kids who were probably playing beer pong in the Olympic Village. Those days are gone forever. If the NHL players go then its guys we see every week playing other guys we see every week and it's meaningless. If the NHL players are kept out then it's scrub vs scrub and it's just as meaningless. There CAN'T be any more David vs Goliath upsets anymore, that's the point. Olympic hockey is irrelevant now, it's been irrelevant for 30 years and it will continue to be irrelevant forever. Once the possibility of "gems like USA v Russia in 1980" was taken away all that was left was the dregs.

Oops, a few mistakes there.
Lets see.
I guess you missed entirely the Canadian victories with NHL participation at 2002 Salt Lake City, 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi. The NHL is not participating in the Olympics for the first time since NHLers debuted at the Nagano Games in 1998.The players as usual wanted to go but the owners see no benefit to the NHL. The NHL would get no copyright to the performance, have to interrupt the regular season for three weeks, risk injury to the players, affecting the league outcomes, and have to pay their own costs and insurance. Moreover, what's the advantage of playing in SK ? Not going to grow the game there.I think if the Olympics were held in Canada or the USA the owners might reconsider since that market would benefit, like it did after the USA-Can final in Vancouver.
Lastly, the IOC says that the NHL's participation in Beijing in 2022 is conditioned on its participation in South Korea . The NHL will have the same view of playing in China. Why bother, with all the risk and no reward for the League? We likely will never see world championship hockey at the Olympics again. There are other international forums however such as the Canada Cup and the World Cup series and I expect they will continue.

These are planned to avoid conflicts with NHL schedules.

Only mistakes are your own Zippy.

I mentioned clearly that Olympic hockey has devolved into a binary state. If the NHL players go it's pro vs pro, players we see and mostly don't even care about every day of the NHL season and it's meaningless. And if the NHL players don't go it's scrub vs scrub. What part of that are you too stupid to understand? You even quoted the part where I said exactly that. Read before posting, you'll make less of a fool of yourself.

People here have been bemoaning the loss of participation by members and a lack of new members joining. Reading the comments by GagHalfrunt reminds me of one reason why that happens. The comments to me are mean spirited, have no respect for a common dialogue and leave, at least to me, a very negative tenor to the thread.

There is no other "professional" league like the NHL. The elite of the elite are in the NHL, other leagues get the scraps. Personally I wish the NHL would stay out of the Olympics as it allows younger and lesser known players a chance to be seen.

Oh no I saw a nipple! My sensitive American mind is torn asunder. I can only hope this never made it on TV because it will ruin the lives of children and the TV station should be fined $11 Trillion dollars. No wif you'll excuse me I paused a primetime TV show in the middle of a fictional investigation of a grisly multiple murder scene

Right, because when you say dumb things you expect a pat on the head and cookie. The fault here is yours. Grow up and own your mistakes, it's how you learn.
