WTF why do local law enforcement need machine guns for?

I was reading wiki, and it seems a lot of local law enforcement agencies have machine guns like the FN P90. Really, what is the need for a gun like this when civilians they deal with don't even have guns like it.

You do know police departments do field SWAT and tactical teams to deal with special situations, right?

The average street beat cop is not walking around with a P90.

p90 would have been useless in that firefight.

a single officer with a single large caliber rifle would have ended that in short order. in fact, as i recall, that's what they ended up doing, raiding a local gunshop for an appropriate rifle.

Back then all they had were pistols and shotguns. They borrowed a bunch of ar-15s I believe to fight back.

We had a guy come into the IHOP here and kill a bunch of people. He then tried to ambush the Sheriff and deputies but then killed himself before they arrived. Had he not shot himself he would have mowed through several patrol cars with the weaponry he had.

Many weapons are damn easy to mod to full auto.

Yes. The M4 was introduced after the registry was closed.

You can make a full auto M4gery with an M16 receiver.
