I'm calm...I'm calm...<taking a deep breath>.

I had a 4 port hub where 2 computers hooked to it (one is NT Server and the other is NT Workstation). The cable modem was hooked to the uplink of the hub. I used special software to share internet connection to the 2 computers (All Aboard 2.2).

All was fine until this.....

I bought a D-Link 5 port 10/100 Auto Switching (DSS-5+) which is an advanced form of a hub, right?

I plugged the 2 computers's cat5 cables to #1 and #2 port. I plugged the cable modem connection to the uplink. I see a light coming on saying that the Full Duplex/100Mbps was working.

The problem is I can't make any connection to the internet and each computers refused to transfer any files.

What did I do wrong?

Do you get link lights on all three nodes? (pc1, pc2, cable modem)

Can the two computers ping each other?

Turn off both computers... turn off the hub... turn off the cable modem. In that order. Then, in this order... power on the cable modem and WAIT for it to be all hooked up to your ISP's network. Then power on the hub and WAIT a few minutes... then power on the SERVER and get it up and running... internet and everything. Then power on the client and fix it.

Sometimes these things are hairy... they require a specific set of things to go right before they'll work. My Linksys did the same thing before I replaced it. You had to do it in a specific order for it to work.

You need to turn off the modem for at least 5 minutes. Many modems learn the MAC address of the device plugged into them and will not work unless that cache is cleared. 10 Minutes may be even better.

I could be wrong but some hubs/switches share the #1 port and the Uplink port.

Might want to try using another port on the D-link

However I could be totally wrong in this, i honestly cant remember.

Man, I so piss!! :|

It doesn't work.

It contains 1 through 5 ports for PC connection and the sixth port for uplink.

I plugged 2 PCs using #4 and #5.

I installed my trusting old hub back and it work just fine.

I'm taking the crap D-Link back unless there is an explaination why it went wrong.

There is a possibility however remote that your unit is malfunctioning. Inanimate objects due fail from time to time.

When I powered up the server...I was able to go online for like 5-10 seconds. Then, after that I can't go online unless I reboot the server.

First, either port 1 or 5 shares with the uplink on that switch (on the 8 port it's port 1). If you are using the uplink, you cannot use the shared port. Second, try plugging the cable modem in to a standard port.

Thank you, Russ for your suggestion. I just came back with NetGear Fast Ethernet Switch and it works like a charm!

I will not D-Link again.

Thanks, guys for all your suggestions.

Hmm...I'm using several D-Links. They work perfectly. I guess you just have to be smarter then the hardware.
