My mistake, thought the "85" referred to the fraction of gasoline in it.
You guys are missing something much bigger than energy content here. If he actually put E85 into his vehicle, which we have no indication is FlexFuel capable and is assumed to be not, it's going to run like absolute crap and fuel economy will dive dramatically because his engine isn't capable of tuning itself for that kind of octane and be misfiring like crazy. Long-term damage possible, but it's highly unlikely since he didn't mention the engine sounding terrible, or a check engine light.
