Waffles are more interesting than pancakes. They have ridges and valleys and holes to store peanut butter and syrup and butter and stuff.
They are usually crispier. Pancakes are lazy and apathetic. Unless you destroy the pancake, butter just slides off instead of melting, blah blah blah.

You are doing it wrong if the waffle is heavy and dense...they should be nice and fairly light for a waffle. At least when my wife makes them they are and I prefer homemade jam on them instead of syrup.
