China constantly takes takes takes and gives little in return -- except a lot of plastic crap and generally inferior products. But the U.S. tolerates it b/c the slave labor costs grease the bottom lines of corporations nicely.

We had better learn to play a little hardball too. I find myself looking at labels a lot more in the past 3 years b/c frankly I'm getting tired of seeing "made in China" everywhere. It's a lost cause on clothing I know, but I'm trying to buy American and/or made in every-other-country-but China where possible.

Sorry for the rant. But it's really irritating me

China and India, as "developing nations" are trying to get the US to agree to exemptions in the free trade agreement, mostly for farm-related goods.
Why should these countries expect us to play by a particular set of rules, but demand to be exempt from the same rules?

Personally, I don't think we should even be in the WTO. IMO, it only hurts American workers.
It was the same thing with the Kyoto treaty.

This really isn't even about the US though. What China and India are trying to do is hamstring even poorer countries that could compete with them in the world market. They are trying to stifle potential competition.

Sad.

A tough hand with China is something I'm hoping a democratic majority will be good for. I'll gladly pay a bit higher prices to avoid their crap.

I know this is a bit dated, (from 2001) but it's from one of the more conservative cartoonists:
http://www.whodah.com/albums/BoomerD/ata.sized.jpg
As a life-long union man, I've had the same attitude for years. I go out of my way to buy products that are:
1) Union Made
2) Made in the USA
3) Made in a free country
I'm realistic enough to know that "Made in China" can't be avoided in every product category...just look at electronics, computers and computer parts, and many other categories, but when I can, even if it costs a bit more, I buy the Made in USA alternative.
I believe American workers are worth it...

wto and un and all them orgs are evil...

pretty funny last night on the warren buffet show they let the guy who runs the nebr furniture mart (buffet co) tell how he's made so much more money bringing in stuff from china, replacing stuff from nc... they didn't ask buffet about the niceness of destroying an american industry to sell some chinese furniture made in no-osha, no care about the environment factories because it was 40% cheaper to buy...

they guy did mention that prices are going up, though... china is outsourcing to vietnam!!! maybe the us will end up getting some work back as the rest of the cheap world gets more expensive...

Wow everyone is blaming China as the sole reason for the trade talk failure. I believe it was the Indians who first rejected the treaty. Don't be so quick to judge, as there is always more than one side to these negotiations.

http://english.cri.cn/2946/2008/07/30/195s387193.htm

...

Chen said the collapse of the nine-day negotiations was caused by the "inability of two countries to bridge the gap between their positions on special safeguard triggering levels." But he did not name the two countries.

Trade sources said the dispute was between the United States and India
, both of whom were facing the pressure of general elections.

The two countries could not agree on the issue of SSM (special safeguard mechanism), which allows developing countries to raise farm tariffs if imports surge, thus protecting the interests of poor farmers.

The United States also refused to talk about cotton subsidies, one major concern for poor cotton farmers in African countries.

"China has fully demonstrated flexibilities and constructiveness, and sincerely hoped to reach a successful Doha Round through working together with other members," Chen said.

He said China had made major compromises and concessions on issues such as OTDS (overall trade-distorting domestic support) reduction for developed members, sensitive products, SSG (Special Safeguard) and ACC (anti-concentration clause).

At the Signaling Conference for Services, China also expressed willingness to further open its market in some key sectors.

"However, just as we were approaching the final point, some minor coefficients failed all our efforts," Chen said.

I rather have China making my products than whinny union high school failures that gets paid 10 times as much. When it comes to button-pushing manufacturing jobs, I rather pay 60 cents than 6 bucks an hour.

I believe they are just concerned about farmers living on SUBSISTENT ( ie no markets) farms which is still about 40-60 percent of their labor force.

Whats really sad is this.

WTO, free trade agreements, UN, all that stinking crap has destroyed our economy. We wouldn't need cheaper products from China if we still had the type of work force we did 50 years ago. We should have taxed any corporation outsourcing the US economy to the point there was no cost savings doing so. If you want to do business in China, no problem. Sell to the Chinese workers manufacturing the product. What, they can't afford to buy them? I guess maybe you'll have to pay them more. Our manufacturing base is nearly dead and it's the politicians who signed us on to this garbage at the bequest of their corporate sponsors who are to blame. We could have created jobs in manufacturing in the Asian market to service the Asian market bringing up standards of living globally. Instead, we allowed our corporations to exploit the poor and destitute citizens of what was and really still is a third world nation to fatten their bottom line all the while selling the idea of "cheaper" goods to the idiotic American Public.

I believe the word is subsistence.

Anyway, China and India are essentially being protectionist, hamstringing poorer nations in the process, all while decrying other trade practices they claim are unfair. Maybe China needs to supplement those subsistence farmers instead of depending on International agreements to protect them? We do it here in the US and so do many others.

I do agree that our own Congress's farm bill is shameful and the absolute height of waste. If they are subsidizing smaller farmers that are subsistence types, I can live with that. However, I get the impression that the large corporate farms will benefit most from this bill, like they usually do. I have other feelings about the timing of it as well but, meh, that's just politics today.

And they both are, oh, can't we call nazis nazis now, is this a new fucking rule your dumb arse invented?

BoomerD doesn't like immigrants, he doesn't give a shit if they are legal or illegal.

He's a socialist and a nationalist, now what do you call that you stupid twat?

Butterbean is another animal, and i didn't claim he was a Nazi, i claimed he was a Neo-Nazist which he is and quite frankly, so are you.

The lot of you are nationelistic punkarses, the difference is that while BoomerD is a socialist that want sthe state to support his nationals you think that only you national friends should be allowed to make a living.

That PER DEFIFUCKINGNITION makes BoomerD a traditional Natonalist socialist or Nazist if if you will and the two of you Neo Nazists.

That is the fucking way it is, deny it all you want but that is the way it FUCKIN IS!
