Hazing is an organized ritual for entrance into an organization, such as a fraternity or a sports team or one of the service academies, where upperclassmen haze the freshman.

Hazing varies greatly in severity, from light, fun and inconsequential to brutal, mean and sadistic.

Bullying is just . . . bullying. It can occur at any time, to anyone weaker from anyone stronger (and uglier of mind.)

Like Zebo, I almost always intervened when I saw bullying carried to an extreme. I just couldn't not.

The private high school I went to had freshman hazing then any sport you go into will have hazing of some sort. I'm surprised many of you have never gone through any type of hazing.

You don't know what hazing is then. Reading a follow-up article, the freshman were willing participants, laughed and found it funny. One overzealous dad decided a pie was a dangerous weapon. The parents of the other freshman requested that no punishment be given to the others as it was all meant in fun. Sadly, some people get it and others don't.

Want to hear something hilarious? The lawyer that filed the restraining order to allow the girls to play in the soccer game was the father who originally filed the complaint. His daughter not only got pie in her face and on her boots but will now be ostracized at school. Good job dad!!!

Girls do stupid things to haze the members of their "team." I'll never understand some of the stupid crap that I heard of girls doing to their new members. 90% of it was just humiliating or harmful and not team building at all.

The whole point of initiation's is to instantly bond the new members of a team, not to drag them around by their necks and hit them in the face with pies. How does that make the girls want to be a part of a team?

We had an initiation on our college sports team and it was all about team building and getting the new members of the team to interact with each other and their older teammates. Scavenger hunts for things owned by certain team members, quizzes on how well they knew their team statistics/records and soon to be teammates (after being given the information), and a big party with the new people as the centerpiece to make them all feel welcome to the organization. Sure there were a few stupid things we did like blindfold them and drive them around in the back of a big 15 passenger van to an "undisclosed location" but we never did anything to harm them or humiliate them.

Hazing is meant to show your devotion and desire to be a part of a SOCIAL organization.

Hazing for sports, outside of brutal practice regimens, is pointless.

Hazing for the military is more of a psycological breaking down of the subject intended to not only see what is inside, but make individuals fit better in to the grand scheme. You sdon't want individual cogs and gears in your machine because you would not be able to function when you lose them.

The main problem with Hazing occurs when the Haze-ers lose sight of what it is really for, a test of devotion, and simply want to humiliate someone else to make themselves feel bigger and better.

BTW Perk, YOU were lucky! We had to get up at 5 in the morning, half an hour before we went to bed!!!!!!

I remember an incident, years ago, of 2 frats taking blindfolded male students out in vans, in late fall/early winter [it was just barely snowing, iirc]. Demanding the guys strip naked, then dumping them at 2am, blindfolded, naked & drunk out in the boonies of western MA on deserted highways several hours drive away from campus. Why the hell any of those idiots wanted to still join those moronic frats was beyond rational explanation.
