Today a clerk at a couputer store advised against getting a 17" display laptop with WUXGA because it would drain too much from the CPU to keep up with screen refresh... I have a 9300 orgered with the 256 go card, but he said the video card doesn't matter, the cpu will still be bogged..

Is he blowing smoke??

Maybe if the laptop has integrated video?

In your 9300 with the 6800 go the GPU should do most of your work. For some games you may need to tone down the eyecandy a bit, or run in a lower res but you should be fine for most things.

And was he talking games or all the time?

I have a WUxGA screen on my laptop (4200 go I think), I'm running word, powerpoint, firefox right now and the CPU is between 1 and 7%

He was talking apps with high frame rates.. I'm going to be using it for video field production and editing... even for those apps, though, the preview windows are small so I wouldn't think it would be a problem. But I did use a Sony 17" WXGA that did drop frames on full screen DV25 playback... but I don't know the specifics of the machine, it could have been some other problem causeing it.

I don't know much about the technology, that's why I'm asking.

Is there any truth to the claim that the cpu is taxed more heavily with a wuxga than wxga display.

Probably. I have a P-M with a 15.4" WUXGA display and I love it. It probably takes a bit more battery power, but still it runs for a few hours no problemo.

EDIT: Wait, he said it taxes the CPU more. That is not true. The video card handles that.

Video runs most of it. I would assume that the higher resolution screans might put a bit more load on the CPU for routing/switching. I would assume this amout would be neglegible though. I always go for the highest resolution possible.

Thanks, that's what I thought, too, that the card would handle most of the work, but the clerk insisted... wanted to switch me to a Sony I guess. He made it seem a 17inch wuxga would be sluggish because of the screen, I guess that's why he's working at best buy. Like I said, the dropped frames on dv25 playback could have been cause by something else in the configuration...
