The melting thing is something to consider, by the way. We left some pictures in a car during the summer without thinking one day and couldn't get the darn things separated again. This isn't an issue usually but it can happen. This is a fantastic deal for people who can meet the quotas, but for a home user it'd be a little tough. We're a business and sometimes have to print manuals to meet the quota and ours is fairly low - about 2100 pages. We've had ours over two years now and love it... right up until we have to order color ink sticks.

After reading your bongus comments I seriously doubt that you even have one of these printers as the program clearly states you are to FAX the first page of your USAGE REPORT NOT CONFIGURATION PAGE to XEROX each month. If you don't believe it, the click here for the explicit directions from freecolorprinters right on their website. DUH it clearly states usage report. The first page of this usage report is extremely detailed to the pixel level and page count is only one of the things consider in your monthly commitment.

Quit trying to intentionally mislead any prospective customers with your crap.

I think that is it for now!

1. The HD holds spooled print jobs. However, the HD option cost around $650.00 so unless you are doing heavy printing it is not worth it. You cannot install a generic HD. You must pruchase directly from Xerox since all options added to your Phaser require a unique option code to be entered into before the phaser will reognize the installed option.

2. This printer uses special EDO SIMMS and you cannot use generic memory for the reason stated above. You need an option code to enable the additional memory before the Phaser will use it.

Even though the freecolorprinters.com site only show the Phaser 850/860 , these are outdated modes and are currently being phased out of the program. freecolorprinters.com is replacing these outdated units with the Phaser 6200 and 8200 for new customers who commit to higher monthly volumes. We just go a 6200 on 12/1 through the prigram.

5. You can order black sticks without purchasing color.

6. Xerox limit you to three free black stick pack per order. Each pack contains three black sticks. You still pay S&H so it is not exactly free if you are ordering only black.

7. The printer comes with a starter supply of sticks whcih is essentially the raboiw pack sold through their site. This starter pack will last the average customer through their first month which is considered a grace period.

FYI - For reference, below is a copy of the actual contract that XEROX requires your to digitally sign. Pay particular attention to the parts that state they can reboke this offer at any time for any reason and require you to return the printer even if you are fulfilling you monthly commitment. You also give the the right to enter your premises at any time without prior notice.

In the event of loss, damage, or destruction of the printer YOUR COMPANY NAME will be responsible to reimburse the Xerox FreeColorPrinters for the value of the printer.

YOUR COMPANY NAME agrees to purchase all ink and maintenance kits used in the printer exclusively from Xerox' FreeColorPrinters e-commerce Web site, using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit card. Information on printer supplies may be viewed here.

YOUR COMPANY NAME agrees it will not relocate the printer wihout the prior e-mail consent of Xerox FreeColorPrinters.

TERM AND TERMINATION. This agreement is effective on the date Customer "ACCEPTS" and has a term of three years, but may be terminated earlier as provided below.

CUSTOMER MAY: Terminate participation at any time by meeting the following conditions:

Sending an e-mail to returns@freecolorprinters.com or by written notice to Xerox FreeColorPrinters, Attn: FCP Returns, PO Box 1000, M/S 7063-275, Wilsonville, OR 97070. Once received, FreeColorPrinters will then email a return authorization and send packaging materials with shipping instructions to Customer.

Customer is required to use packaging materials provided by Xerox. Customer is responsible for costs of packaging, return shipping and for any obligations accrued prior to the date of termination. Customer will respond in a timely manner to communications from Xerox or its assignee regarding pick up arrangements for the printer.

If any of the above conditions are not met within 30 days Customers notice of Termination will not be effective, and Customer will continue to be responsible for monthly reporting, and fees, should they apply.

XEROX MAY: Terminate this Agreement at any time by e-mail or written notice to Customer. Customer shall, at Xerox' option, make the printer available for pick-up by Xerox or ship the printer back at Xerox' expense in accordance with Xerox instructions. If Customer fails to return the printer to Xerox within 30 days of the termination date, Xerox will charge Customer an amount equal to $100.00, plus applicable taxes, for each month remaining in the term of agreement.

REMEDIES: Xerox may exercise the following remedies concurrently or separately and without any election of remedies:

Enter the premises wherever the printer is located and take possession of the printer without demand or notice, without court order and without liability to Customer for any damages occasioned by such entry and/or Xerox may obtain a court order for possession.

TITLE AND RISK OF LOSS, SOFTWARE AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. Xerox or its assignee shall retain title to the Printer during the term of this Agreement. At the conclusion of the three-year term, if Customer has satisfied its obligations under this agreement then title of the printer will pass to Customer. Risk of loss for the Printer shall pass to Customer upon physical delivery of the printer. Title to software shall remain with Xerox or its licensors. Software is provided under license, subject to the terms of a separate license agreement, a copy of which is included with the Printer.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL XEROX OR ITS VENDORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF CUSTOMER'S USE OR PURCHASE OF THE PRINTER, EVEN IF XEROX OR THE VENDOR HAS ADVANCE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

SERVICE/DISCLAIMER. As specified in Section 1, Xerox FreeColorPrinters will provide service coverage for the printer in accordance with Xerox general terms and conditions of service, as long as this Agreement is in effect. HOWEVER, THE PRINTER IS PROVIDED WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. XEROX DISCLAIMS ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMER'S SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR BREACH OF THIS AGREEMENT IS RETURN OF THE PRINTER TO XEROX.

WAIVER. The failure of either party to enforce any provision of this Agreement shall not be construed as a waiver of such provision or the right thereafter to enforce each and every provision. No waiver by either party, express or implied, of any breach of this Agreement shall be construed as a waiver of any other breach of this Agreement.

ASSIGNMENT. Customer may not assign or otherwise transfer its rights or obligations under this Agreement without the prior written consent of Xerox. No attempt to assign or transfer in violation of this provision will be binding upon Xerox.

GOVERNING LAW AND FORUM/ATTORNEY FEES. The rights of the parties hereunder shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Oregon, USA and any litigation hereunder shall be brought in the federal or state courts of Oregon. If litigation, or collection actions are commenced by either party to enforce this Agreement, the prevailing party shall be entitled to recover its reasonable costs and attorney's fees, both at trial and on appeal.

NOTICES. All notices shall be given in writing, including e-mail, and deemed effective upon receipt. Notices to Xerox should be sent via e-mail to agreement@freecolorprinters.com, except where indicated above. Notices to Customer will be sent to Primary contact and/or Secondary contact email addresses.

e-mail a reminder to Customer. In any given month, a customer will not be charged both the $75 usage fee and $100 noncompliance fee.

Purchase all ink and maintenance kits used in the printer from Xerox' FreeColorPrinters
e-commerce Web site, using a Visa, MasterCard or American Express credit card and at all times keep a valid credit card on file with Xerox.

Operate and maintain the printer in accordance with the documents provided with the printer.

Update Customer's contact information, including e-mail address, as appropriate.

Not relocate the printer without the prior e-mail consent of Xerox.

PlatinumGold - Yeh it looks slightly different that the one I posted above. Is this the actual contract or from your initial signup? It looks like the signup letter an not the actual agrement. Your acual contract can be found under your account information via the link at the bottom of the page or click here (requires login). In any event, Xerox can terminate the program at any time for any reason and you have no say. We have been a member of the program since its inception in 1998. During the early years Xerox was very lieniant and basically did not follow through with commitment levels. However, since Hal Weinstein took over the program last year they have really started to crack down on the commitments. We are not up to eight printers and love them. However they are not for everyone and they are hardly "free"

We love ours also and use them to print every thin from legal briefs to corporate brochures. Our early units have well over 200K page counts without any problems. The only beef we had early in the program was with the so-called maintenace kits. As you probably know they are not really maintenace kits but revenue generators for Xerox since none of the consumables in the kit expire at the intervals stated by Xerox. The other issue was with the initial published page count for maintenace kit. For example the exteneded maintence kit use to state a 45K usage when in fact the actual is beteen 25-29K depending on your prior usage profile. When you install the kit the Phaser makes an arbitrary predetermination of the allowed page count for that kit and then prgrams it into the EEPROM (ie page counter) that you install with the kit. We went back and forth with Xerox about this for seveal months and they finally conceeded that it was false advertising and sent us 5 extended kits for our time. They have now changed the wording on the kits to state the yield is "up to" instead of an actual count. In reality, under normal printing the extended kit will calculate a yield between 20-30K pages. In order to get the max yield of 45K you would need to print less than 2% coverage based on their formula which is near impossible. Someone in the ofice also figured out how to reset the EEPOM in the page counter from the kits so they can be reused. We don't reuse them here , but the last I heard he was selling these on eBay.:Q

How difficult is it going to be for me to print 2500 a month? Right now we don't even have a decent printer since we have to outsource everything. I am thinking if we bring even 50% of our printing in house we should be able to meet the quota, but not sure.

May have to think seriously about this...I guess it would force a few of our underachieving DTPs to get out there and hustle up some work if they knew we were gonna be charged for not making the quota.

And what I cut and pasted was from the same FAQ after I logged into my account.
As I orgignally stated, they changed what they required about 3-4months ago. I am not steering anyone away from this, hell, someone sent me a PM a couple months back asking about it and I told him to email me a pic, I would print it for him and mail it via usps and I did.
I luv the thing and think the program is great. Just trying to let people know that they changed what they required for faxing as proof of quota.

It appears that you can get the memory a sh|tload cheaper if you go third party. Kingston has it here for $40. Never gone wrong with kingston.

Worth considering if more memory is needed for higher res prints.

i thought you could not do this though because you neded an activation code to get this memo to work? Also what res does it print with out the extra memo, all i can find is that to print at 1200dpi you ned to add 128mb more mem but it does not say what it prints without it!

I'd assume that it prints out at 600 DPI without the extra memory. I also think Kingston will take the memory back if it doesn't work. Seems like a cheap gamble to me - and I don't think that anyone here is going to pay Xerox's insane prices for the official stuff. I don't have one of these units left, but I'm going to be filling the app this coming week. Will let y'all know...

And what I cut and pasted was from the same FAQ after I logged into my account.
As I orgignally stated, they changed what they required about 3-4months ago. I am not steering anyone away from this, hell, someone sent me a PM a couple months back asking about it and I told him to email me a pic, I would print it for him and mail it via usps and I did.
I luv the thing and think the program is great. Just trying to let people know that they changed what they required for faxing as proof of quota.

Yep, it's true. That was me. Thanks again mboy. It was a fabulous printout. Here's some general questions for you all since the topic is up, I never could figure out the answers. Does xerox have a legal sized paper tray that could be purchased for these printers? And has anyone printed legal size before? Do you know what the margins are like? I read a user review on cnet, someone was complaining that the top margins in legal size were some ridiculously huge amount like 1 inch, i'd be interested in knowing if this was true or not. My business mostly does legal sized graphic printing. Thanks much folks.

Thanks for the deal. My wife has been on me to find her a deal for a color laser for her real estate office. She cranks out tons mailers, brochures, listing sheets, just listed, and just sold cards every month. She just got the approval email and is very happy. She exited that the pronters will handle up to 85# stock. they use 45# constantly.

well i cantell you of my situation but i am not sure if this was luck or if they are always this fast! I applied tuesday night, late wednesday i got the approved email and thursday the printer shipped by truck it will be here monday! I hope that helps!
