Where does it say anything about free black ink?
And do they charge for shipping for the black ink and if so, how much is shipping? TIA

It really isn't a printer for "regular" users either. I did this deal at my last company and its a very nice printer.

From what I gathered, you have to buy the color ink to get the black ink free. hope this works

There at least used to be, I believe there still is, another way to get black ink. There was a form you filled out and they would just send you black ink, without ordering anything. They charged shipping, but it was a reasonable amount. I think you could also call them. Sorry I don't have more details, been a while since I looked at it too closely.

This is a great deal. I'm on the second month of the program and it does great prints in color. We've ordered additional wax color sticks, 200 bucks for 5 sticks for each color (3), in total, 600 for color and you can request as much black color sticks as you need. Free shipping if you order more than $500. Two months ago, you could qualify with 2000 pages. They do take you credit card info and they do approve established business much quickier.

If you print nothing but black and white, it will cost you about 1/2 cents per page, cost of the maintanence kit. $200 kit for 40,000 pages = .005 cents per/page. This is much cheaper than our HP 4100s that cost $125.00 per toner for 10,000 pages = .0125 cents per/page. <--- does not even include the 200k maintanence kit.

The penalty for under printing your quota is $75 per month and missed reports are at $100 per month. You would just have to fax a config page to them. Just make sure you can meet your quota before signing up. The best thing, is that you can return it if you don't like it or if the quota is impossible to meet.

After evaluating several (HP and Ricoh) color printers and color copiers, this printer is fabulous. And doesn't cost you a penny to aquire. Others in this printer class can easily cost you between 4-5k and only comes with 1 year warranty, not the 3 years, Xerox is giving on this deal. 2 years extended warranty by HP run at least 1200 bucks.

We did this program at my former employer. Seemed to go through ink very quickly, but then again, it was at a school, and lots of color printing being done. We did inhouse publications of student magazines and some brochures for advertising. I was quite impressed by the picture quality as well. Someone commented on the sheen the pictures get, personally, I thought that was a nice touch, almost professional looking... If I could afford to print this much, Id do this myself.

How long do you have to remain a member? ie. when is the printer yours?

Edit: Nevermind, its 3 years

So if you just print black ink and you print 2500 pages a month... then theoretically you just buy color sticks once and ask for like

2500pages x 36 = 90,000 pages = 2 service kits = $400
Plus the cost of buying one color stick set and then asking for a buttload of free black ink

How many pages does a stick of black ink print, if youre printing just standard double spaced word documents full page of text?

You have both B/W and color page count quota per month. However, page count is only one of the factors that Xerox considers when determining if you have met both your monthly and term quotas. The first page of monthly usage report that you submit is very detailed to the point of how many pixels per color have been printed. Attempting to "trick" the program auditors by printing blank pages, a few words per page, overprints etc... will not work. When you initillly sign up for the program, Xerox asks you how you will be using the printer includig the anticipated coverage area per print. All of these factors are used to determine if you have met your monthly and term quotas. Page count is only one of the factors While it is conceivable to get away without ordering supplies for a few months, you will eventually get caught in the yearly audits and they wil simply bill your account retroactiely. We have eight printers under this program of various models and they are hardly free. Tis is a great deal if you have a legitimate business need.

Check their requirements for quota verification. They changed it 3-4 months ago and now only request the config page which only gives the total pages printed, not the color breakdown/usage of the older more detailed pages.

what saddens me is that i may have to send this printer back after 15 months or so. i'm just not printing as much as i used too.

i'll give it a couple of months, even if i have to pay the 75 for a couple of months, it's still well worth it.

Nothing has changed in the program with reference to what you are required to FAX . We just recevied or latest unit on 12/1. Xerox has always and still only requests the entire first page of the usage report. However, this first page contains extreme detail about your usage right down to the pixel . Page count is only one of the factors that they analyize. In fact the page count on your usage report is not even the actual page count of the printer since it ignores internal documents printed. If you want an accurate count, it is accessable via the printer's web interface. If you are relying solely on page count for your commitment fulfillmenty, then you will get an unpleasent surprize one day about 18 months into the prgram . The only thing that has changed in the freecolorprinters program is that for the newer printers (ie the 860 and the just introduced Phaser 6200 & 8200 replacements) you are required to maintain the printer on a connected network and you authorize Xerox anytime access to your printer throgh a TCP port (1044 I bleieve) and you must enable them access to this port through any firewall that may exist. The newer Phaser printers also automatically email your usage report to Xerox so no FAXing is required.

Please read before you confuse the issue any further with this garbage. The process you defined above has ALWAYS been the process since the inception of the freecolorprinters program. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. You FAX the first page of the usage report if your printer contract states so. THE FIRST PAGE IS EXTREMELY DETAILED AND CONTAINS USAGE INFORMAION TO THE PIXEL NOT JUST PAGES PRINTED AS YOU STATED. XEROX USES ALL INFORMAION ON THAT FIRST PAGE TO EVALUATE YOUR USAGE NOT JUST PAGES PRINTED.

The FAX process above is only valid for the older Phaser 840/850 models. For the Phaser 860s or newer placed after July 1,2002 you must allow your printer to email your report. Your specific contract will state which process you are suppose to follow, but in any event pages printed is one ONE of the criteria used to determine compiance with the program as clearly stated in the terms and conditions on their website under your account information.

either your talking about a different program or your talking out of your @ss. i've had the 860 for 15 months, i've tried and tried to set it up to email but the tech support people at freecolorprinters.com says that is not possible.

the page that you fax to them HAS changed. it changed about 3 months ago.

Had this for about 8 months, very happy with the printed pages and the deal. My quota is 2150 per month. most of my work is b&w, they've never said anything.

With the online printer report always indicates more pages printed than the actual printed page indicates. No idea why that is.

If you really need to print that quanity, this is a great deal with litttle or no downside.

ok i have a few questions that are not answered on the site maybe one of you can help!

1. it shows an optional 5GB HD what is that for?

2. It does not say what type of memory it uses,do i upgrade the mem with normal pc100/pc133 simms? or is it propritary memo?

3. what do the accesories cost? the extra 500 page paer holder and the stand are the ones i am interested in!

4. i noticed that the 840 and 850 are older models of the 860 (current unit) but xomeone was talking about a 9200 or omething like that what is that?

5. If i need more black ink but dont need color at that time, do i have to get a color one also even though it is not needed?

6. is there a limit to how many blacks i can order ie can i just order 3 years worth of black ink immediately (about 110 sticks) so then i will always have black even when i do not need color?

7. does this come with one stick of each color when i get it or what?

I think that is it for now!

If you meet the requirements this is a good deal.

FYI - If you send print outs through the mail and it gets irradiated(like here in DC) they will melt. Great if your company does psychedelic artwork.
