we have a small LAN here... there's 6 computers, 2x windows xp and 4x windows 98 and everything worked fine.

recently i switched 1 of the computers to xp and added another new xp machine, making 7 in the workgroup in total.

thing is, the xp machines see eachother but can't access eachother. it keeps giving access restrictions etc but i've tried everything from disabling the firewalls to enabling full file sharing etc and i just don't know what to do anymore this is getting really frustrating

i HAVE to be doing something wrong.. back home we have 4 comps, 3xp and 1win2k and everything is perfect but for some reason i can't get it to work here at the office.
some of the comps have xp in english and some in portuguese, but all are SP2 so that shouldn't matter right?

please any suggestions are really appreciated i'm desperate

note: i also get a "duplicate name exists on network" error even though i've changed the names a ton of times and they are all unique...

Enable simple file sharing using tools - folder options - view tab - last option, tick it.

reseal the windows xp installation using sysprep then setup the computer to a different computer name, sorry about the simple file sharing. I am far from exhausted from ideas on this.

i've actually been tied up with other things at work today so i never got a chance to look at it, BUT on the other hand, i did set up 2 xp machines on the 'other' workgroup (there's 2 in the office) and they worked perfectly and i set them up exactly the same way as the ones that wouldn't work in the first workgroup, so i'm beginning to think the problem is with the workgroup config and not with the machines...

Uhh.. workgroup is nothing but a name for machines to associate themselves with by default. there's nothing to config. Unless you mean the 'other' workgroup is on a different subnet. And I've never seen Windows be wrong about duplicate name on network errors.

what i meant was there's 2 sides to the office, one side has a server and works fine.
the other side is connected with a router and works fine with win98 machines but not with wxp...

Make sure your passwords are not blank and that they are the same on all the machines. Otherwise you need to set the Local Security Policy to allow blank passwords over the network.
