Wow, might have to do this. I loved the original and had a great time with Apocalypse (blowing the crap out of things is great). Might have to get this.

I wanted to run UFO Defense in a window, and found a forum post telling me how:
The steam version of XCOM - UFO defense uses dosbox.

The resolution is the same - big and blocky. I prefer to run it in a window, slightly enlarged. To do that, I just changed these parameters in steam/steamapps/common/xcom ufo defense/dosbox.conf

fullscreen=true --> fullscreen=false
windowresolution=original --> windowresolution=1024x768
output=surface --> output=ddraw

to smooth the edges, some, I also changed:
scaler=advinterp2x --> scaler=super2xsai

You can see the different scaler options and what they do here. Basically, different anti-aliasing options. The output I changed to ddraw since the others didn't support windowed mode in anything but default resolution.

Nice find. I am in for 1.
The X-com series had some great games back in the day.
I swear Terror from the Deep almost cost me my sophomore year in undergrad.
I wish these could be played on my cell phone. My Motorola Q probably has a faster CPU then the early computers I played these games on.

Also in for the deal.

I still have the original X-com 3.5 in floppies, and proud of it!

I'm in.

I still have my X-Com and TFTD on 3.5" diskettes, along with the original manual and box from the original X-Com.

I am such a geek!!! *LOL*

get x-com 1 for free here, try it out.

That's warez, matey. Please delete your link and pay your $5 to be legal.

doesnt look like 'warez' site to me. looks like a site for abandonware
Abandonware is just another name for old warez. It's not legal, only partially tolerated by publishers. _Something currently being sold is not abandonware._ X-COM has no right to be on that site...

Sorry... but the DOS version looks like it certainly has been abandoned. The one sold off of Steam will include a DosBox(or similar) runtime environment packaged with the game to run.

So it's the same DOS version just with DosBox pre-configured for it.

It's warez, and not even the abandonware flavor of warez since the game is still being sold.

Yup. Abandonware isn't exactly legal, but even so, it does have a pretty clear definition. It isn't just a synonym for old software.

Games that are currently being sold--even if they weren't for some period of time--are not "abandonware." Neither, for that matter, are games that have been officially released into the public domain--those would be called freeware.

And those behind the "abandonware" movement--at least when it first started to appear--would be all for something like this--a game being re-released. That was the idea--make the games available for sale or they'd make them available via unofficial channels.
