I have not heard of that, but just taking a stab at it, it might be like a few years ago when you could use Audigy 2 ZS drivers for most Audigy and some older cards. This was before they released the unified driver in 2006. Like if I wanted to use the THX Console from the A2ZS cd, I could use it on my Audigy as they don't seem to offer apps like that anymore (thank god they did combine a bunch of crappy programs into the Audio Console).
Since there was not much of a change between the Audigy and even the Soundblaster Live! 5.1 cards compared with the Audigy 2, it was possible to use Audigy 2 ZS drivers and software instead of the provided installation CD. Some features like EAX Advanced HD were just not possible, but the drivers worked for the most part.
All it required was using the Creative Compatibility patch on the folder that the drivers/apps/setup files were in so that it would do a force install, even though they technically weren't made for it. It was probably just an .inf change or something like that. So I'm guessing if it is possible, it may be similar to the above situation. I still have the Creative Compatibility Patch.exe saved on my hard drive (only 108KB), but I would suggest looking for a guide or new patch version first, but I can send it to you if you want to try it out anyway.
edit: Threads like
this one
show people saying those new X-fi drivers work fine on their A2ZS (thus should work on an Audigy 1, even if that patch is required), but that is talking about Vista. I'm not sure which OS you are using.
