The Platnium has the breakout box which is a pretty convenient feature. Although I must admit...the X-FI Platnium at $200 is a very hard sell for me when one can commonly pick up a Audigy2 ZS Platnium for ~$55 shipped (ususally after $100 MIR though).

Know what's ironic? Neweggs' page for this product has NO PICS of the actual SOUNDCARD! :Q Pics of the 5.25" bay device, pics of the cables, pics of the manual...but no pics of the CARD ITSELF. That's ironic.

Oh, and $200 is a rip. A long time ago, I got in on a hot deal for a Audigy2 ZX, OEM for like $100. It's still working perfectly and I see no reason to upgrade it at all. The XFI is just an Audigy2 with 2 more channels that don't get used anyway.

The X-Fi is everything the Audigy 2 should have been. One of the many features is bit-perfect @ 44.1kHz (no resample) and improved CMSS-3D Headphone. There are other notable improvements as well.

If your in the market for a new soundcard, I would recommend the the X-fi XtremeMusic. Same basic card, sans 62mg "xram", and only $82 shipped.

ok i actually own this and paid thru the nose when it first came out. I previously had the audigy 2 zs platinum in and i used the fatality to replace it. in FEAR i noticed about a 25 fps increase w/ this card over the zs. No joke. And no i don't have crap for ram it have 2gb of kingston hyper-x pc3500 w/ a athlon64 4000+ and a 7800GT CO. The only thing i don't like about the sound card is the huge media controller. The zs had this neat almost credit card sized controller, while the x-fi fatality's is bigger than my tv's. Switching to the fatality you will notice:

Increase in accuracy of music
Incredible ambient sounds
pinpoint accurate 5.1
awsome front panel that auto recognizes stuff plugged into it
a week's worth of pay going to newegg.com

BUY IT!

Well i'm an audio phyte that has sonic xs speakers. Also a pretty good musician (music performance major and computer sci major) so i can pick up tiny differences in quality. To the average joe you prolly won't notice quality differences but for those who are picky, you will. But yeah the fps increase is awsome and unlike the zs plat i've had no driver compatability problems. (creative finally made a good driver set)

Occasionally, I'll get the popping and clicking noise with this and the Platinum card as well. I'm using Klipsch 5.1's with both systems. I've found that rebooting the system tends to clear up any issues. (Its also possible that the amps of the Klipschs could be the issue.) Most of the time things work well, actually very well. By the way I haven't noticed any real difference between the Fatality1 and Platinum cards but I'm not playing any games that might make use of the memory in the Fatality1.

I'm somewhat skeptical of a $200 soundcard. If you're looking for quality audio for your computer at least 80% of your budget should go to your speakers and amp. In other words, this soundcard and any speakers marketed specifically for computers is really overkill.

Personally, I use a turtle beach santa cruz ($30), a pair of bookshelf speakers I built from a kit ($120), and one of those nifty little Sonic Impact digital T-Amps ($30).

i'm using klipsch 5.1 ultras myself, so the speakers are already set.
it's funny since my pops and clicks also disappear when i reboot. also setting my pci latency from 32 *default* to 64 or 128 really helps a lot
in terms of how long i can go before the pops and clicks return. i've also noticed the pops and clicks happen
most often when xferring files or during heavy downloading.

Only pops when loading sounds on BF2, then it goes away.
