Wiki says Avatar budget was $237 million, made $2.7 B.

Box Office Mojo says X-men 3 made $460 M and First Class did $353 M -- all worldwide. Wolverine movies actually did better than First Class slightly.

Since Wolverine is once again a lead character, $400M shouldn't be hard.

How in the world is tangled so expensive? That makes zero sense. They must have royally screwed up somehow.

Wow. Didn't know Disney shot that much wad for Tangled. It was such a mediocre film. Next to John Carter it must be one of Disney's biggest flop.

If I'm reading that correcting, it looks like it grossed $590 million worldwide. Even accounting for the marketing costs, it looks like it did quite well with its $260 million budget.

edit: The Lone Ranger has got to be one of the largest, recent disasters for Disney though.

I watched Lone Ranger last night. I don't like Depp much but he did a decent job as Tonto. The film had so many things going on that if you weren't paying attention you would get lost. The whole nature out of balance thing with the rabbits was weird and unneeded.

John Carter had no hope as it was a stupid plot. Lone Ranger could have been great if it were more focused.

Disney does have a hit with Frozen. Best traditional Disney movie in a while.

I used to read comics a lot when i was a teenager. I've got a fairly large collection sitting in my parent's garage that I've been unwilling to part with. So some of the recent success of X-Men and Spiderman (two of my favorites) has been pleasing in the last 10 years.

With that said, we now have a new X-Men movie coming up. I just know they're going to screw up the new X-Men movie. Days of Future Past will make money but be absolute garbage. And then they'll follow up with Days of Future Present and kill any remaining love for comics I have.

Please prove me wrong.

I don't really get why Lone Ranger did so bad. Actual movie quality aside, the name, western setting, and action were things I thought would at least make it a moderately high grosser.

I think it's partly Johnny Depp fatigue.

Pirates of the Caribbean #4 cleared a billion dollars in 2011. I was going to watch the Lone Ranger just because I found out he was playing Tonto, but I don't go to theatres much anymore. Obviously, others didn't agree...

I think that has a lot to do with it, but I think the marketing for the movie was terrible as well. I haven't seen it, but the trailers make his character out to look like he's playing it WAY over the top and so I think that turned a lot of people off.

That's become treatable. Unfortunately, as is commonly the case, the treatment is worse that the symptoms.

Side-effects include movies starring Justin Timberlake, Jesse Eisenberg, Bradley Cooper, Jonah Hill, and other actors that may result in the desperate self-inflicted death of the patient.

.

I dunno about that. I thought the rule of thumb is that the studio gets to keep ~50% of the gross. This means they are probably in the red after marketing cost. Then it's on to home video and TV to help dig out of the hole.
