I went to see the latest X-Men movie tonight, and it wasn't too shabby. While this wasn't a common opinion, I wasn't exactly a huge fan of First Class. I thought it flailed around too much with an uninteresting villain (January Jones -- Emma Frost -- was the only nice thing to see there!), and focused heavily on a cast of what felt like Real World: Mutants. I kind of wish that Kevin Bacon's character would've killed a few more of them. The only thing good about the first one was Charles and Erik, and I'd argue that this one was really more of the same in that regard.

However, I think the difference between the two lies in their emotional focus. A good villain serves as an emotional focus because you despise them, or depending on the character, you might actually like them in some twisted way. However, Days of Future Past (this isn't really much of a spoiler, but I'll tag it anyway)
doesn't really have a villain. The emotional focus is on the idea of hope... as the move loves to mention quite a bit at the end.
However, I think that's part of what made the movie a bit weaker for me. Ultimately, (yet again, not much of a spoiler if any...)
I had the same problems with Marvel's Civil War as I did with this movie. The ending felt somewhat abrupt and too "neat".

One note for the ladies, you get to see Hugh Jackman ass.

Also, there is a teaser scene for the next X-Men movie (note: the title of the movie will spoil the teaser) that is after the full credits! (note: not the fancy credits)

This movie was basically a fancy way to reboot the series and make X3 not happen at all

But I really liked it.

Oh, and there's one small thing that bugged me (this shouldn't be a spoiler at all)... from what I gathered, 10 years had passed since First Class. However, none of the mutants looked any older.

This movie was basically a fancy way to reboot the series and make X3 not happen at all

That was my first thought when I saw Jean Gray at the end... "Yay! No more Last Stand!!"

EDIT:

oohhh... a crimson powered nightcrawler

One thing I was wondering about...
Azazel is Nightcrawler's father, but it's revealed in Trask's files that Azazel is dead. Now, I did say that 10 years had passed, so did Mystique (Nightcrawler's mom) and Azazel get busy at some point? It's possible since Nightcrawler was abandoned after his birth; so, not seeing him isn't uncalled for. However, we also didn't see him at the end in Xavier's mansion.

"Days of future passed" was an album title from the Moody Blues way back in 1967 which contained the classics "Nights in white satin" and " Tuesday afternoon", Hollywood cannot even come up with an original movie name LOL...

Don't know if I can deal with Tyrion being a villain.

I think I might be in love with him. :'(

"Days of Future Past" is a storyline in the Marvel Comics comic book The Uncanny X-Men issues #141-142, published in 1981.

Hollywood had nothing to do with making up the title...

I liked this better than the comic arc "Days of Future Past". Mostly because Wolverine (and Hugh Jackman) is much better character than Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) for a movie.

I didn't mind the story, besides the entire time travel paradox and the ending not being ambiguous, like in the comics.
Shouldn't have shown the future being changed, IMO. Leave it so the characters are left wondering IF they did change the future, or merely delayed what is inevitable.

I don't mind the overall theme (mutants and man having to coexist or destroy each other), but I felt the story was overall weak. As an X-Men movie, however, it is easily one of the best.

Also, I missed the credits scene because, like every fucking movie I go to see on Thursday night with my GF, she cries about being tired and we have to leave before the credits. You've been awake for the past 2 hours, another 5 minutes isn't going to hurt you... I did read about it, and since I already knew the name of the next X-Men movie, I wasn't surprised. Still, going to hope I catch someone putting it up on youtube. This next movie will actually be one I am looking for.
The Age of Apocalypse was one of my favorite comic arcs.

It wouldn't work for a continuous movie line. It's fine for comic books where they have alternate universes but it would be too confusing here. Hell the comic books are even confusing themselves. Plus it would be like X-Men: Inception.

If you want to know what it was...

It started off with a view of some really sandy sand, and the camera pans to show a cloaked guy with his arms raised. Huge groupings of limestone are flying through the air like some sort of children's puzzle in what appears to be the creation of a pyramid. The camera slowly circles around the cloaked man to reveal a young, gray-faced individual and four horsemen shrouded in shadow (the sun is behind them) up on a distant hill.

Fair enough, the Moody Blues were the first to "coin the phrase" so to speak but since one was an album and one was a comic book series I'm sure they weren't interested in filing a copyright lawsuit.

I read about it on the internet.
Even knew right away when they chanted his name (En Sabah Nur), who it was.
Just hoping I can see the actual scene on youtube or something soon, as it sounds pretty good.

The X-Men movies have been too much of a shitty mix.

XMen 2 and First Class were great. But, everything else was ,... meh to terrible.

I am getting this as a $9.99 BluRay Black Friday special - pass.

X-Men 1 launched the comic book movie craze basically and then came Spider-Man.

I liked it. When it came to the end, I pretty much summed it up this way:

Fuck you, Brett Ratner and fuck your shitty ending, too! -Bryan Singer

Saw it last night. Was hungry for some M&M's or something, and wanted to go to the concession stand. I think I could have gone at any point during the movie and not missed anything.

If you're a fan of the genre, it's entertaining. But, for the genre, it's barely average, if that. At no point was there any edge of your seat suspense; you knew the outcome. Each of the scenes
with the sentinels seemed exactly like the previous scene. I had the feeling of, "okay, CGI an 8 minute scene of sentinels killed mutants. Oh crap, we blew the budget on those 8 minutes. Well, let's divide it up into 4 or 5 separate scenes about 2 minutes long each.
And, as I said, you knew the outcome. At the end, when
Mystique is aiming the gun at Trask, you knew she was going to put the gun down. Then they'd flash to the sentinels in the future who are getting closer and closer and closer... and if you followed the plot, it absolutely didn't matter what those sentinels did, since that future relied on what still hadn't happened in the past. I don't know how long it was, but it seemed that they stretched out the lowering of the gun to several minutes. Maybe it was several minutes; maybe it was the perception that it was several minutes as the plot moved so agonizingly slowly forward.
Not to mention the whole, hey everyone, a mutant just took an entire sports stadium, picked it up, and smashed it onto the ground, surrounding the White House, then said, all us mutants are going to kill all you regular humans' asses. But, one mutant saves the President, so all is forgiven - no harm, no foul, Trask's program cancelled. Seriously? The entire world is worried about the mutants after Paris, an entire stadium is destroyed an relocated, and one mutant lowering her weapon changes the world's perception??

On a separate note, I saw this movie as part of a double-feature with Neighbors. In comparison, X-men DoFP was awesome. I can't figure out how Neighbors had such positive reviews - for the immature humor frat boy genre of movies, it was a steaming pile of crap. Or, for analogy, Neighbors was to funny as Hangover 2 was to funny.

Well that's disappointing.

After the Godzilla mess, not gonna bother

I think Hollywood has it's head way up it's ass for years now, but I guess as long as you don't blow too much money on the CGI you might profit.

Well, I suppose, don't take my word for it. It has around a 75% favorable rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I've disagreed with RT's critics before - in the other direction. I've liked some humorous movies that they didn't like. Though, I think this time is the first time I've disliked a comedy that they've liked.
Funny scenes:
The dialogue when he had to milk his wife. Mooooooo. 1% 2%, etc.

The 2nd airbag & the 3rd airbag. The first airbag was spoiled in the trailer; completely anticipated; not funny.

The penis molds/not shaving/"we're supposed to be erect?"/sizes on the table.

I thought there was mention that Wolverine had to wake up in the future for everything in the past to have really happened. That is, if he died, it would have been as if he never left. Kinda like forgetting to hit save on the Word document you've been writing for the last 2 hours.

So in that regard, the events in the future did matter right up to the point where Logan woke up.

One thing I don't understand.
So altering the past made X3 never happen, ok. But how is it then that Xavier is still alive in the alternate "dystopia" future when he was killed in X3? At that point the events of X3 hadn't been unwritten yet.

And for that matter, if that future where they had to send Logan back never happened, then how is it the changes he made altering the past would take hold? It seems like the catalyst for what drove the time hopping in the first place would have been eliminated, reverting the timeline tampering.

In any event, the oldschool cast felt pretty neglected. They seemed pretty sidelined throughout the film,
only to be quickly killed at a scene near the end.
