I use alot of X10 in my house too. I usually just skip over their email, and I use Popup-Killer, so I never see any popups... Their products work great! This is a good deal.

I hooked my mother in law up with one of the cameras, she uses it to keep an eye on her birds out in the back yard, she raises lovebirds. It works great!

X-10 products rock, especially for people with disabilities. I too have my house wired with x-10. They also sell the best learning remote for the price. As for the pop-ups, they are easy to get rid of, don't be so lazy. I use Opera browser that allows you to refuse pop ups via "quick preferences." Let x-10 advertise and make more money. Perhaps if they sell enough stuff they will lower the prices. Those of you who say you wouldn't buy from them because of advertising probably wouldn't buy from them anyway.

This is definitely a warm deal given the frequency of deals from x-10. I want to buy a Thermostat set-back controller to save energy costs. I should have bought one at the beginning of winter. I can't remember how often I leave my house and forget to set back my thermostat. With the set back controller I will be able to set it back using either my computer from work (via pc anywhere and Active Home) or touch tone controller using my phone.

X10 rocks! Although the popups s*ck bigtime the products are great. Try them out when one of the many deals are going and look HERE for a great control system with a web interface!

Personally, I started with Holiday lighting then moved to other things and love the lighting controls etc.

OTR: Why not us an X10 thermostat itself?

Home automation (HA) is such a nerdy, geeky hobby with a limited market potential. Only people like me (and some of you) get excited by being able to turn on my sprinklers by telephone, having a perimeter motion sensor grid that activates a "lived-in" look in the house, and making sure my garage light goes off after nobody's been there for 5 minutes. Yes, I like to do this kind of stuff. In addition to the standard modules X10 offers, you can "switch" anything. And you can control these modules and switches via wireless controllers, keychain remotes, computer interface, telephone, etc. The possibilities are endless. A geek's dream come true.

The HA stuff has been sold by every major manufacturer as some point over the past 25 or so years (Honeywell, RCA, IBM, and many other major companies have sold a private-labelled version of X10 HA stuff). Radio Shack still sells X10 stuff ("Powerhouse" brand), but not many other retailers sell it. Like I said, it is a niche market for geeks and nerds.

But being such a limited market, X10 had to branch out. Some genious had the idea to get into the wireless cameras. I guess it kinda goes along with their HA and security product lines, but the cameral stuff does not really appeal to me. Neither do their marketing tactics of late.

Great home automation products. Bad judgement with their marketing efforts as of late.

The setback thermostat is the silliest product X10 ever made. The idea of a remote controlled thermostat is cool...and there are many REAL X10-controllable thermostats out there. But the X10 setback thermo is kinda like a "Rube Goldberg" device. You mount this module UNDERNEATH your thermostat. When you turn the setback thermo ON, it heats up some resistors and the HEAT generated from these resistors fools your real thermostat (mounted above it) into thinking the room is warmer, turning OFF the heat or turning ON the A/C. Very low tech, but people say it works. You just have to remember the logic (summer on=turn A/C on, winter on=turn heat off) for your X10 controller. You can get REAL programmable X10 thermostats from Leviton, but they'll cost $100 or so. The X10 setback is $15.

I disagree with the limited market potential part. In the future, Home Automation will be as common as indoor plumbing

Pay attention in college. It seems like they have a lot to teach you about punctuation and grammar. Not to mention that to find the best information about a product it is generally best to either go to the vendors website or go to Google and do a search for "X10 review".

Go ahead and PayPal me your tuition.

First you should to watch your language and second Anandtech is NOT a user review site . If you want some answers do some work and find sites dedicated to reviews and such.

The Home Entertainment rocks ! . I just got my kit two days ago and I can watch all the movies I have in any format on my TV plus the sound quality is pretty decent.

If you guys gonna use those wireless cams, better watch out where you point them. I bought one and when I turned my on, it was working ok but when I shut it off...lo and behold...I got a clear view of my neighbor's patio. Apparently he had one too and his signal was transmitting loud and clear to my receiver. Good thing it was just his patio and not something else I didn't want to see.
Here's a neat thing to do, strap that sucker on a battery pack and tie it to the Thor truck that you bought a while back (u did get one didn't you?). Now you can remotely drive your Thor all over your backyard from your couch.

I got a deal with the camera and a few other goodies about five months ago- wanted to use the camera to monitor my baby when he was sleeping in his crib. The quality was too low, especially in low-light situations (like a darkened bedroom ). All the stuff still sits in a box in the office. Maybe I'll get up the gumption to try something else with it (some type of lightbulb adapter, the camera, and don't remember the rest).

Pretty much a waste for the intended use...
