im going to be getting my x1800xt today and i wanted to know from you guys if you suggest the stock cooling since it directs the heat out of the case and the fan adjusts according to the load. or should i use my zalman v700 cu heatsink/fan which im guessing would cool better but doesnt direct air out of the case. although, i did install a exhaust fan on the empty pci slots so that might take care of that.

what do you think?

edit: another question. would it be possible to hook up the zalmans fan to the video card so the video card adjust the fan speed?

The V700 isnt really designed for the 1800xt, the VF900 has been designed for both the 1800 and 1900 cards. I think you'll be better off sticking to the stock heatsink in that case.

Ive just ordered a VF900 for my X1900 so ill report back on how well it works in a few days.

The stock cooler will cool it better if you overclock the card- if you can stand some fan noise. Since you already have both coolers you can expirement on which one works best for you.

I couldn't stand the noise my 1800XT's stock cooler made, so I put a VF700 on it and never regretted it. It runs so much quieter, and if you run the fan at 12V, it cools much better than the stock cooler even when overclocking.

I had no problems installing the VF700 whatsoever. The vf900 might have a little better cooling capacity, allowing a bit more of an overclock.

I'm not sure about the x1800's, but for my x1900xt the zalman vf700 at 100% cooled no better than the stock cooler at 50%, although it was much quieter. If you're not overclocking then it might be ok, but for better cooling I'd suggest the Accelero X2.

Accelero X2 FTW. The VF700Cu won't keep the chip cool very well at all and the VF900 is just more expensive and performs worse, or equal at best, when compared to the Accerlo X2.

Thats why they came up with the VF900

I tried the vf900 too, and it was only a 2-3 degrees cooler than the vf700, also at 100%. So, yeah, I'm recommending the Accelero after having tried both zalman coolers.

well i know for sure that im not going to buy the accelero X2. its useless to spend more money. i already have a good zalman. i dont plan on overclock hard, or probably not even at all. so for me, its either stock or zalman. i would have considered the x2 if i didnt have the zalman already.

it looks like im gonna do a test. ill put it in stock and see how i like and it see the temps, then tese the zalman, then decide from there. i just wanted to see if there was a landslide decision so i wouldnt waste my time.
