x1800xt stock cooler on 4850?

Yes, no?

An x1800xt I have bit the dust (PSU fried it?), and my 4850's reference cooler is loud and does not seem to cool adequately, so I am considering the possibility of putting the x1800xt reference cooler on the 4850.

The x1800xt reference cooler seems to be the same as say the x1950xt reference cooler, which uses more power under load, and has a more inefficient GPU, so I am assuming that the x1950xt runs hotter. A friend has an x1950xt and with the stock cooler he gets much better temps than my 4850 (reaches 90 degrees C+), so I am assuming with the x1800xt stock cooler I will get better temps than with the reference 4850 cooler.

Lol, although it's a non-issue since you already bought a replacement, I can't help but ask...

you try OCing the x1800 at all? It's pretty unlikely that your PSU fried your video card. I had a 7900GT that started artifacting after prolonged use + overclocking (OCed it from 450 to 550 core, being crazy and risque as I was). video cards, if run at their default clocks, usually aren't in danger of burning up unless case ventilation is completely stagnant.

In any case, the only way to tell if your cooler is adaptable is to take the whole shebang apart and look at them. I have my doubts, but never having tried, my opinion means batshit.

Comparing temps for GPU's between x1950xt and 4850 is pretty moot point, however, since ATI designed the 4800 series to run hot (courtesy of high clocks and high power). the 4800 series burn up a whole lot more wattage than any of the X1800/X1900s, so heat output is respectively much higher. But it's pretty clear that the 4850's stock cooler is very underwhelming, compared to the X1800's cooler. If you do manage to adapt the cooler to the new GPU I have no doubt you'd get better temps, but the real question is not "should you?" but rather, "could you?"

The x1800xt was a from a secondary computer and it wasn't OC'd. I don't know what happened. The PSU was a maddog, and last time I tested it under GPU load the voltage on 12v rail dropped to 11.55 or so (measured with multimeter at PCI-E connector), so I don't really trust it. I had a quality spare PSU but was too lazy to install it.

I have a thread about the x1800xt's death here.

I will probably go ahead and try the cooler swap, but I'm gonna see what information I can gather first before I tear out the 4850.

damn. Mad-Dog...XD ah the memories I have with that brand.

I actually got a 5.1 sound card from Mad Dog for 99 cents after rebate. the card worked fine, despite lack of driver support beyond the initial installation CD. Not exactly a name brand in any case...

voltage drop to 11.55 isn't too bad. There will always be voltage drops in any circuit due to hard ware resistence (if I remember correctly). I suppose it's possible that a power surge was what sealed the deal on your card, but thus far the components I've fried in any of my computers is the mother board (P5N32-SLI with Pentium D 805) and even older Ram (Ultra 512mb DDR400), all due to overclocking escapades.

I've become a big proponent of quality PSU's in any case, because a bad PSU can be problematic. Back on the topic,

if you're X1800 cooler looks like that...

http://www.tcmagazine.com/imag..._HD_4850_cooler_02.jpg

and 4850 cooler looks like that...

Asides from the obvious "I wonder if the four screw holes are spaced the same" you have to wonder if the ram sink connections will fit...

Hey, I'm not the one with the cards, so you go ahead and crack that open and I'll be here to give you my condolences (and a hearty HA-HA) if you should fail in your endeavers

Well it would not work, the GPU on the 4850 is a bit farther back and so the PCI bracket at the rear of the card gets in the way of the rear of the cooler. If I flip the cooler around it covers the PCIe connector.

But this wasn't a complete waste of time, I opened up the fan shroud and found the entrance to the GPU heatsink covered with a nice layer of dust. Temps are better now.

Crap, I just planned to do the same thing. Just got a broken x1800XT on ebay cheap ($10) and have $7 worth of heatsinks to hack apart for VRM and Ram cooling. I was planning on a $17 hack and slash cooling system that wasn't a 747 taking off in my case during gaming. I like quiet, so I switched to my 9600gt for now. Ill have too see how this goes for me now! Either way I have some stuff to play with for cheap.

O come on, 2 months exactly and talking about modern video cards and cooling their super heated cores!
I didn't find the threat until to tonight or I would have posted sooner.

Definition of Superheating: the phenomenon in which a liquid is heated to a temperature higher than its boiling point, without boiling

In any case, there are plenty of threads only 1 or 2 days old that you can comment on. Old threads like this that have obviously been resolved deserve to R.I.P

superheating <> super heated? I'll rephrase, The 4850's really really really hot core temps. Either way, I don't see any other x1800 vs 4850 cooling threads, but it is cool. I can try to find somewhere else to post my results (or lack of). I am up for suggestions.
