From Firingsquad:

ATI?s pulled off one hell of an accomplishment. As shown by our testing, with one simple driver update, ATI?s gone from last to first place in Quake 4 performance. There?s a wealth of data you can glean from these benchmarks.

For one thing the RADEON X1800 cards really don?t begin to shine until you turn on 4xAA. For an example, let?s take a look at the Quake 4 numbers at 1600x1200 in high quality mode. While the margin between the X1800 XT and GeForce 7800 GTX was merely 5% in favor of the X1800 XT 512MB without AA, the margin opens up to a whopping 18% once 4xAA is applied. Meanwhile, the X1800 XL goes from finishing behind the GeForce 7800 GT, to outperforming it by 10% at 1600x1200 with 4xAA/8xAF.

The tables turn a little once Quake 4?s ultra quality mode is turned on. The GeForce 7800 GT is able to outperform the RADEON X1800 XL, while the GeForce 7800 GTX pulls to within 16% of the X1800 XT. We have a feeling that the X1800 XT?s 512MB of memory is helping it maintain its lead a little here. That would help explain the X1800 XL?s surprisingly slower showing in Quake 4?s ultra quality mode (remember that the ultra quality mode is borrowed from DOOM 3, using uncompressed textures and full resolution normal maps, with a typical level taking up over 500MB of texture memory.)

Now that?s ATI?s demonstrated that they can deliver a faster OpenGL RADEON card, the onus is now on them to deliver boards to retail. The RADEON X1800 XL still hasn?t shown up on Price Watch. Both ZipZoomFly and Newegg carry X1800 XL boards from ATI and Sapphire (with prices starting as low as $380), but this is still woefully inadequate to compete with the avalanche of GeForce 7800 GT cards that can be found on the market. As we showed you earlier this week in the news, the GeForce 7800 GT can be easily purchased online with a free copy of Call of Duty 2 for as low as $340. ATI?s got to get more boards on the market in order for prices to fall.

Meanwhile, the RADEON X1800 XT can?t be purchased at retail yet. ATI has stated availability of November 5th. That?s about 2 weeks from now. Until ATI is actually able to deliver a product on time, we?ve got to take this date with a grain of salt. Sure, it?s possible ATI may be able to deliver on their promises this time, but given their track record it?s prudent to be skeptical. If ATI can deliver though, they?ve got an excellent chance at regaining mindshare among enthusiasts.

Clearly ATI?s got a strong product. The benchmarks we?ve presented to you today show they?ve got the fastest graphics card on the market for Quake 4. Now the question is how will NVIDIA respond? It?s certainly possible they may have a few tricks up their sleeve in the driver department to improve the performance of the GeForce 7800 GT and 7800 GTX as well.

Sweet mother of mercy. The 16 pipeline Radeon masacres the 24 pipeline GTX. In OpenGl. What a day... Just look at the scores in high res with AA/AF.

That's interesting, to be sure. I'll have to read that review after I get home from work tonight to see what's up....

really? i was actually gonna go out and buy ti on monday. how is it bad?

I've been reading mixed reviews of the game - some people like it a lot, some don't. I'm still thinking about picking it up myself - you should check out the "Official Quake 4 Thread" over in the Software forum to see what other people think of it.

Dont go by just my opinion. Read reviews, and other peoples opinions. Its worse than Doom3, and just flat out boring. The multiplayer is the only thing that interests me.

But looking out for the bigger picture, this means ATi will get better frames in every (?) Doom3 engine game coming out. Which is better for the consumers.

Graphics are more polished than doom3, hence the higher requirments for the game. Quake 4 is really awesome, agreed with rage187.

I want to see in depth image quality comparisons.

On Q4, I have the dvd collectors edition, the multiplayer is fun. Dont know about SP. Its a good game though, and absolutely stunning to look at. The shadows and lighting make it the best looking game on the market. Its almost a shame how fast it moves.

It reminds me so much of Quake 2, thats what has gripped me.

I can't wait for the mods and for peeps to remake the old Q2 maps for CTF. Add a grappling hook at it's gonna be mod of the year.

And playing makes me salivate for Enemy Territories: Quake Wars.

at last...ATI up there with some good OGL

still doesnt mean much if you cant buy the said cards, but im sure they'll turn up. but with Nvidia not having any decent OGL competition lately id expect theres more to come from the green team, they just havent needed to turn the wick up on OGL so far. (when your the leader in something....why improve when your competitor doesnt come close)

i dont expect this lead to last long, D3 engine has always been NV's strong point

good performance all round though...i was scared Q4 was gonna be a bit of a hog. but it looks ACE and performs ACE

Atleast doom3 engine is better optimised than F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R kills every card out there apart from SLi and Xfire (highend of course).

True; market means I can walk into my locla Bestbuy and pick one up for MSRP. Getting one from an online vendor at a rediclous price doesnt count.

Very nice job by ATI. Glad to see they are finally getting their OpenGL butt in gear.

Now, I would like to see the X1800XT against a 512MB 1500MHz mem GTX.
That would be kewl.

Holy crap! Go programmable memory controller + 512-bit ring bus!

I'm not a big fan of Doom3 or Quake4, but for those who play it this is a huge boost on X1800.

I'm also looking forward to the 512MB 7800 card. I want to see how much of ATI's boost is from having double the memory, and how much is simply because they have higher clocked memory and the ring bus.

Also, the 512MB 7800 card should make for some astronomical SLI scores @ ultra high rest.

I dont think so. My local BB doesnt carry crap. The highest Ive seen is a 6800GT, and X800XL. As long as you can get them online, at or below MSRP thats all I care about. And the X1800XL's have dropped in price very fast. Hopefully the XT will as well.

Whether Quake 4 is a good game or not is beside the point. The graphics are unquestionably the best out there at the moment, and the fact that it's OpenGL makes the X1800XTs performance win even more amazing.

Actually, thats an opinion, and far from fact.
