Way to go for ATi, but i want to see the % increase in other OpenGL games apart from doom3 and games based on the doom3 engine.

Hope this will make Nvidia respond since openGl is Nvidia's playground.

Whens the last time Nvidia polished openGL for their cards?

It is uncapped for benchmarking purposes.

Also guys, i dont think this is an architectural strength. I think ATI finally got their shader replacement working correctly.

What the heck are you talking about? It's nothing to do with shader replacement, it's a different algorithm for the memory controller.

How do you uncapp the fps lock, i have heard of this but would it make a difference. I would assume it wouldnt because everything is still rendered at 60fps regardless, also would this impact the flow of the game any?

I think the cap is removed in the benchmarking demo/tool.

Either that or it's some command they use.

Some posters have reported gains in Riddick as well. I know you dont want to hear that.

As for the MP, yawn, quake 3 all over again - it's not 1999 anymore, the vast majority of gamers have moved on to bigger and better things (CSS/BF2). Although id isn't completely clueless, at least they're working with the ET team to bring Quake Wars which will hopefully be a good game.

Going to disagree with you there 5150. I do NOT like BF2, COD, any of that "true war" stuff.

For me, I play games to escape reality, not enter a reality I wouldn't want to be in. To each his own.

I just have no interest in shooting a guy with my rifle, or a helicopter with a rocket.

I understand that personal preference varies from person to person but if you look at the numbers of players for these types of games (FPS shooters) then BF series and HL1/HL2 are the leading games by far. Now IMO both of the aforementioned games are better than what Quake/Doom type of games offer simply because I've been exposed to the same old same old from id so long that I've grown tired of it and the numbers indicate that many others have as well. I can almost guarantee you that Quake 4 will be the least popular of all the Quake games for MP play. In fact I bet it will get overshadowed by Quake Wars if the game proves to be as good as the hype.

I'm sure most of us are happy with any advances any company comes up with Ackmed.

LOL - envisioning you rubbing your hands together, thinking "Oooh yeah- I'll be pwning those nVidiots now!" when most of the grown up ones are thinking "Cool- I only benefit with more fast cards to pick from."

Indeed. Now we have several adequate product lines to choose from.

As noted, this is good for everyone.

Since time has begun Nv hasnt had to improve their Opengl performance to compete with anyone, now Ati is making advances they will start to improve.

In the end both camps win, since competition is great for everyone.

Not as many as the "good old days", but such is life. <lapses into nostalgia, remembering poring over the CGW video card roundups with several chipmakers and OEMs>

I may be dating myself here, but I also miss the old days. I was a 3dfx fanatic, I still feel sad that they aren't in the game anymore.

Hmm. Makes me think that the R520 series has lots of room to grow/future potential. I wonder if I should get the Sapphire X1800XL instead of the eVGA 7800GT-Cu for $20 more...

You should be able to get a 7800GT for $50-$100 less than a X1800XL?

It was however stupid of Raven to make High Quality settings not even saturate a 128mb card and then have Ultra Quality jump its needs to 500mb. Thought it was alright till I changed my AA to 2xQ.

You think a gtx with the same mem as the x1800xt will be better? I doubt it. The x1800xt still has a more efficient AA algorithm, and a programmable mem controller. Look at the x1800xl vs. the 7800gt - they both use 1ghz mem, and in HQ mode with 4xAA the xl beats the gt, even though the gt is slightly ahead without AA.

The 7800 GT pulls ahead again though in Ultra Quality settings with 4XAA/8XAF, so it isn't all rosey for ATI.

The X1800 XT seems to have arrived at parity performance to Nvidia in OpenGL, for Doom 3 engine at least, when they have similar pixel fillrates and memory bandwidth amounts.

Why doesn't the XL do the same at Ultra Quality 4xAA mode though? It's behind 10+%, just like in HQ noAA and I can't figure out why. One would assume if it's 10% ahead with AA in HQ, it'd be 10% ahead in UQ with AA.

I am not a fan of the Doom series at all though the Quake series is a lot better even though they use the same engine.

Is there anyone at all who has played Marathon Infinity? Now there was a superb multiplayer game. You could call it Bungies first great hit. It's available as an open source project now. Graphics are still horribly outdated but gameplay is still very good. It's the multiplayer modes that make Marathon excellent. http://source.bungie.org/

Now, as far as the ATI card goes, I think the new GPU architecture changes have a lot of untapped potential and some of the driver updates may be tapping into that extra potential. So long as it's proven that they're not sacrificing IQ to boost framerates like some previous driver cheats that the video acceleration industry has tried to pull before.

Any boost in ATI's performance helps even nVidia fans since this pushes nVidia to perform even better with their next series of cards. Bottom line, gamers are the winners.

I'm also puzzled by this issue - you'd think at Ultra settings any card with less than 512mb vram would be suffering badly, and yet somehow the gt pulls ahead. My 2 possible reasons are either:
1) the new Ati driver still has some issues to be fixed, or
2) Nv is pulling another optimization trick out of the hat

It breaks the game because it ties the game engine speed to the framerate (e.g. 120 FPS means your character moves twice as fast).

Yes but for single player I prefered Marathon 2. Infinity had some nice levels but it also had some really tedious ones too.

I don't want just ANY 7800GT. I want the eVGA 7800GT-Cu for $369 at newegg (vs. $389 for the XL).
