I just ordered a x1900xt and was wondering aboot aftermarket coolers. So far it seems that there are only two available: The thermalright V-1 Ultra and the Arctic Cooler Accelero X2. Any opinions on these vs the stock unit, or another one that I don't yet know about?

You could look into the Zalman VF900. Not sure how it compares to what you listed though.

Accelero2. Its VERY quiet, its pretty inexpensive ($22 from the egg) and keeps the card very cool.

Check out the cooling forum for lots of reviews.

You can use a Thermal Adhevise or you can use a Thermal pad that bonds at high tempeture like ones from HoneyWell.

I think the point is that the ones that come with the X2 stick, so you want to use some pads that are non-adhesive as opposed to the ones that come with it in the event that you would want to remove the X2.

edit: back on topic. Personally, I stick with the stock cooler. It's a tad loud for my taste, but you get used to it. The reason I keep it is because it exhausts the hot air out of the case, whereas all of the aftermarket coolers just push the hot air into the case. With a card that runs as hot as the X1900XT, this is a lot of heat getting dumped into the case.

I don't like loud, that is why I am interested in the new one. Not alot of support for the Thermalright. It did alot better in the reviews I found, but none were on sites I had ever heard of. Anyone ever use one?

I was also looking but I was turned away from the x2 since it didn't push the hot air out of the case like the stock cooler did. They should makw a silencer for the 1900 series..

I had mediocre results with the vf900, and right now I'm using an accelero X2. I have 120mm intake and exhaust fans, and it's enough to remove the hot air even without the direct exhaust video card cooler. The downside is that it only fits that one card, not as many as the zalman, and I also kept the sticky ram pads so I guess it's on there for good.

The stock cooler is one of the best bets for coolings' sake. (Just be sure to apply AS5 though). I also had the VF-900 and it wasn't that bad, until it ate the AS5 I had between it and the GPU. (Yes, it does "eat" AS5. I applied a good amount on when I installed, played with it for about a month, then checked it due to wierd temps and crashings. There was hardly any left. I couldn't believe it)

That and the heat coming from it was pretty substantial to have lingering around a case like nitro said. I had a window in my TJ-06, and it sometimes made en ever so slight "pop" due to the built up heat expelling in between the plastic glass and steal side panels (it was bolted on). In addition, I once took of the side panel right off after I got done playing Oblivion, and felt the heat emanating from the inside of my case.

Instead of wasting time with another so-so cooler that would probably only offer minor improvement, I went water cooling and have loved it ever since. Not everyone wants to put out the cash for that, and I understand why.

If quietness is what you are really looking for along with decent cooling, the Thermalright is probably the best bet. I think Bull Dog has one and has gotten some very impressive results with it and he could probably show you some other places that have enjoyed it.

Depends on you, meaning if the stock cooler is too loud for you, or if you think the card is getting too hot, then by all means go ahead and slap that vf-900 on. But the heat won't be blowing out of the case anymore, as it would with the stock cooler.

Personally, I would put the vf-900 on simply because I'd like the lower gpu temps and the silence. And I have decent case airflow so I wouldn't have to worry about the aformentioned case heat issue.

Either way, enjoy your x1900xt, I know I did when I had one

Cheers.

I'm using the pads. I don't for see my self taking the cooler off once its on there. I would imagine it could be a PITA to get it off once on though.

what's the difference between the x1900xt you bought and this one (besides the latter being currently out of stock until 7/11/06)?

jadbox's x1900xt find on newegg for $355.99

the "other" x1900xt (same mfg) on newegg for $399.99

i can't see the difference between these 2 cards, both are retail versions made by sapphire... etc.

much better. The x2 is more for silence than it is for cooling ability, still it's a bit better than stock. The x1900 stock fans (xt and xtx in particular) are VERY loud. Replacing it, regardless of whether you are overclocking or not is a good idea. The vf900 is the best for cooling I think, though I havn't investigated the nv silencer.
