Newegg has a x1950xt for $190 after a $20 rebate. What does the 8600GTS go for?

Even if 8600GTS was faster than X1900XT (which it isn't by any means), how can you possibly be making an informed decision without seeing what AMD has to offer in about a week with their mid-range?
In addition, it has never made sense to *upgrade* from previous high-end to next generation mid-range.
It wasn't worth it to upgrade from 9800Pro to 6600GT, from 6800GT to 7600GT (or from X800XT to X1650XT). Neither is this any different. Plus complete lack of any DX10 games out...
If I had an X1900XT in fact, I wouldn't even upgrade to 8800GTS 320 which often loses to it in high AA modes.

XFX GeForce 8600GTS PVT84GUDE3 HDCP Video Card - $208.65
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 256-P2-N761-AR HDCP Video Card - $197.90
BFG Tech GeForce 8600GTS BFGE86256GTSOCE OC HDCP Video Card - $224.99
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 256-P2-N765-AR Superclocked Video Card - $225.90
If you ask me the 8600 GTS needs a fast price reduction because it's performance just doesn't justify the +$200 price tag
If your asking why we don't have numbers for the 8600 GTS in overclocking it's because XFX has done a great job getting every last drop of performance from 8600 GTS XXX, increasing the overclock on either the memory more than just a few MHz would result in artifacts.

So, perhaps the reduction in stream processors are crippling 8600 more than 128-bit bus.
I would agree with that - it seems likey that the core just isn't fast enough.

I doubt that. If that were true, we'd see the card's performance skyrocket when overclocked to 750mhz. That just isnt the case.
