Is this a bad move to go from x1900xt to 8600gts... I don't see any comparisons.

The 8600GTS is about on par with a X1950pro so I'm guessing it would be slower than a X1900XT.

Even if 8600GTS was faster than X1900XT (which it isn't by any means), how can you possibly be making an informed decision without seeing what AMD has to offer in about a week with their mid-range?

In addition, it has never made sense to *upgrade* from previous high-end to next generation mid-range.

It wasn't worth it to upgrade from 9800Pro to 6600GT, from 6800GT to 7600GT (or from X800XT to X1650XT). Neither is this any different. Plus complete lack of any DX10 games out...

If I had an X1900XT in fact, I wouldn't even upgrade to 8800GTS 320 which often loses to it in high AA modes.

don't do it
extremely bad move

performance difference is vast in directx 9 apps
u'd be better off getting a 320mb 8800 GTS later when the price drops(shud happen as when ATI releases their cards)

Bad move. Either go for an 8800GTS 640 or wait to see what AMD has to offer.

Newegg has a x1950xt for $190 after a $20 rebate. What does the 8600GTS go for?

Bad idea, X1900 to an 8600 is a parallel move at best but a downgrade in most cases. All you would get in exchange is DX10 support for all of the DX10 titles available now. /endsarcasm.

That LegitReview is pretty interesting though that it shows the 8600 doesn't scale particularly well based on clockspeed. Surprised me a bit, but I'd say it changes the outlook on the 8600 from an enthusiast point of view. 620 to 730 MHz on the core and over 400MHz on the memory yield very little in terms of performance gains.

XFX GeForce 8600GTS PVT84GUDE3 HDCP Video Card - $208.65
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 256-P2-N761-AR HDCP Video Card - $197.90
BFG Tech GeForce 8600GTS BFGE86256GTSOCE OC HDCP Video Card - $224.99
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 256-P2-N765-AR Superclocked Video Card - $225.90

If you ask me the 8600 GTS needs a fast price reduction because it's performance just doesn't justify the +$200 price tag

I couldn't find them on the egg, thanks.

This is what bugs me, most of the reviews put it up against the x1950pro where it barely holds its own. But regardless of what nvidia wants it to be competing against, pricewise its competing against the x1950xt 256mb which hands the 8600gts' ass to it on a platter.

The performance delta is enough that you can't even really say "It has DX10 and low power consumption though!" as a justification. I won't pretend those things aren't really important to some people, but I don't think they're really that important. Realistically, by the time full blown dx10 games come out both these cards will probably be to slow to matter.

I'm quite happy with my 8800gts 640mb right now, but this new part is at best a mixed bag that needs a price reduction.

If your asking why we don't have numbers for the 8600 GTS in overclocking it's because XFX has done a great job getting every last drop of performance from 8600 GTS XXX, increasing the overclock on either the memory more than just a few MHz would result in artifacts.

Basically, nVidia knew about the limitation they placed upon the 8600 series with 128-bit bus and 32 stream processors, so they tried to counter it with jacking up the clock to maximum levels. Usually, mid-range cards have decent overclock head rooms that allows them to "almost" touch the lower high-end cards, but it doesn't look like it's possible with 8600. I can't tell whether 128-bit buss hurts more or the reduction of 2/3 of stream processors hurts more. However, from look of few benchmarks, it doesn't look like 8600's are bandwith starved (i.e. 8600GT and 8600GTS performance difference scales relatively equally moving to higher-resolution). So, perhaps the reduction in stream processors are crippling 8600 more than 128-bit bus.

8600 series definitely doesn't appeal to enthusiasts much as unless you HAVE to get a mid-range DX10 card now. Even then, for what? Crysis won't come out till Q3-Q4 of this year. Most current games barely have support for DX10(i.e. hardly any difference between DX9 and DX10). It's really bad to buy hardware in anticipation of software requirement. The pricing of 8600 shows that nVidia is taking advantage of lack of ATI/AMD's DX10 offering. Otherwise, they would've definitely priced them more aggressively, or didn't cut that much on specs. I'm starting to suspect that nVidia have a bit more disingenous plan for EOLing 79xx series so fast.

I would agree with that - it seems likey that the core just isn't fast enough.

I doubt that. If that were true, we'd see the card's performance skyrocket when overclocked to 750mhz. That just isnt the case.

Geez at high res the x1900xtx is pretty much twice as fast as the 8600 gts. The only thing its good at is 3dmark... my fav game evar.

Definitely a very bad move.

Its lacks the shader power (which IMO is the current weakness of the G84, maybe bandwidth too), but if your looking for a card for media playback/HTPC, then this card > all the rest due to the new VP2/BSP engine.
