As you can see if you look at my sig, I'm building a new PC and have ordered an XFX 7900GT Extreme from Monarch for $329, which STILL hasnt shipped out yet. I've now been looking and found an X1900XT for $439, which is a steel IMO, and I'm not sure whether I should upgrade for $110 or not. I do play @ 1280x1024, but this *may* change in the future because I plan on getting a new monitor (17" CRT is killing me). Also, will the X1900XT work with an FSP 450W PSU?

someone should tell you the performance diff. But I will be able to tell you indepth performance diff when my x1900xtx arrives. Once it gets here, I will do some gaming and see how IQ and fps differs.

If you're getting a higher res LCD soon as you stated, the x1900xt will serve you better.

Probably not higher res LCD, I can't afford anything above a 19" LCD which would limit me to 1280x1024 anyway. If I get something higher res it will be a CRT. I still think it might be a good idea to get it even if I'm not getting a better monitor, because w/ 512MB of RAM, many more pixel shading processors, ect, it will do me better in the future w/ performance, and likely now w/ IQ.

The 7900 is probably the best choice for your resolution right now, even a 7800gt would be good for the resolution. I think the 1900 is more future proof, games wise, and ATI has the better image quality, IMO. 1900xt for 439 is an awsome price aswell.

Your power supply should be fine, just check the amps on the 12v rail(s), they should be 30+ (combined if there seperate)

Thanks for the replies guys, and I just went ahead and bought the X1900XT, and cancelled my 7900GT order from Monarch. I have mixed feelings about it, but in the end I'm getting a more future proof card for only $123 $458 total vs $335 total) more, and I like ATi products better anyway.

This generation is panning out to be pretty nice. Just a month ago, you'd be looking at a good $800 to get the top single card performance on the planet and have a hard time finding one in stock. Now people have to decide between getting a card that can run everything they would need to for a while maxxed out for $290 or getting the top card on the planet for $140 more.

Prices are still dropping as well. Anyone who said a few months ago the top end single card could possibly drop into the $3XX range before the DX10 cards hit market would have been laughed off the boards.

Hats off to both ATI and NVIDIA for the cost/performance ratio of this generation.

I don't think ATI's x1900xtx is built for Extreme HD as The 7900's are. So far the 7900GTX has the upperhand in performance according to gamespot's testing reviews. Also the image qualities on the 7900's are a tad bit better than the current ATI graphics cards. So far it is a balancing match between nvidia and ati. Either card is fine but if you want extreme HD, I would go for the 7900gt or gtx.

Most people would disagree with you.

I disagree after owning BOTH x1900xt and 7900gtx. The 7900gtx isnt worth the cost compared to a brand new x1900xt for 439$. sure the shadows look better on the 7900gtx in bf2 but thats it and the x1900xt is still faster and cheaper.
