X1900XTX and Oblivion question...

I am playing on my second rig with the X1900XTX, my specs are in my signature. I have all the settings MAXED out in Oblivion and running it at 1600x1200 with HDR on, so no AA and HQ AF at 8x.

The game runs smooth...above 40fps at all times when indoor or near a town...But when I am outdoors and there is a bunch of grass (vegetation) all over the place, then my fps goes to like 19-25...Then when I get near a town then my FPS jumps up above 40 frames...Is this normal?

Thanks for the help.

It looks normal. Vegetation stresses the card and gives it a lot of work, morover in big sceneraios, where drawing distance makes it even harder.

Are you talking from experiencing this in the game yourself? I just thought the X1900XTX should handle this game at max settings.

I'm talking in general. Open environments usually have a lot of detail, more than indoor envinronments. Take into account that the game is demanding, and you are running it max @high res and with HDR.

So you mean ATI is not vegetarian ?

So anyone on these forums have a X1900XTX who can tell me what settings are optimal for them? I just don't think the card can run everything maxed...Unfortunately.

Maybe a driver update will fix that. Al least Nvidia is supposed to release a driver with a nice performance boost for that game

The weird thing is, even if I lower the shadows or the resolution, I really don't get that much of a FPS gain....I can put the resolution at like 1280x1024 and max everything and it will run around the same FPS at 1600x1200 with everything maxed...It has great FPS when im indoors in like a dungeon or a shop. But when I am outdoor and running around, it can drop below 20 frames at times....Why won't my frames per second go up if I lower the settings?

Thanks for the help...

Does your SLI rig run it better? If it still chops, then this game is poorly coded. There is no way 2 x 7800GTX 512mb SLi cards and dual core A64 2.8ghz with 2 gigs of ram can't play this game at everything maxed out and 0 slowdowns.

I purchased the game yesterday and have an ATI x1900xtx. How are you measuring the FPS? Is there an in-game console? Commands? I'll check on my FPS when I get home and let you know. I do know that all the in-game graphic settings are maxed and I'm using HDR. My ccc settings are "Application Specific".

Thanks

I am using the Ati Tray Tools and that by default shows your fps on the top right corner....I have not installed it on my SLI Rig, and I really think a X1900XTX should be able to stay above 20 fps outdoors at max settings. I assumed it could atleast...

P.S. I would appreciate if you check your fps at max settings outdoors with a lot of grass showing....If you don't want to use ATi Tray Tools, you can just use Fraps to measure your fps.

w/ a single X1900XTX, while it may be the best card available, you can't expect to run (one of) the most demanding game ever @ 1600x1200 with max details, HDR, soft shadows, and 8x HQAF. This reminds me of how it is on the 360- It's perfect when in a town, but in the wilderness, it's choppy half the time.

I have the settings at 1600x1200 and all the distances are maxed out and so is the distant view...Everything is on high basically except AA because im using HDR. Also my HQ AF is only set at 4x, but everything in my Tray Tools is set to High Quality. How do you turn off or on soft shadows? Because that was a big performance hit with FEAR and I can probably turn that off and increase my framerate by a lot.

EuR,

I downloaded FRAPS and made it out of the sewers to the outside. I stood in the grass near some rocks after killing those two furry creatures near the camp. The grass had red and blue flowers and was swaying side to side.

I started capturing a benchmark using FRAPS and walked to Fort Urasack(spell?) while remaining in the grass and continuously looking all around at the grass and rocks.

FRAPS Benchmark Data:

Total Frames Captured:2486
Time (ms): 66058
Min:31
Max:44
Avg:37.64

I?m using 650/775 (default) settings for the x1900xtx and CCC is set to Application Specific while Oblivion game settings are all set to max with a resolution of 1600x1200. I?m using HDR, so unable to enable AA in the game and V.Sync is turned ON.

I think I?ll have to purchase FRAPS in order to record a video, but this should give you a general idea. The game runs very smooth and graphics have not been disappointing. Additionally, I?m using an FX-60 slightly overclocked to 2.91GHz.

Thanks

Zanta did you have HQ AF on at all?

P.S. If I turn the grass distance all the way down, which eliminates the grass...My framerate is really smooth outside...Now I am wondering should I play with some other settings or keep everything maxed out and just turn the grass off?
