Alex

I haven't tried to play at that resolutions to see any issues since I'm monitor limited, x(

worth the upgrade for me? i kinda don't want to drop the $ to build an entire new system.

p4 3.4ghz northwood
2 gigs
74gig raptor
x850xt agp
audigy2 plat
dell 2407fpw - i game @ 1920x1200 for most games now, the x850xt isn't to bad.

was hoping to keep this rig up at least another year.

i read all 17 pages, but it's kinda iffy with some saying 3.2 is fine, and others saying you need c2d.... =)

If you still able to play most games at that resolution, with your current CPU and GPU, upgrading to a X1950 PRO will give you a nice boost, after all at those resolutions, you are GPU bound.

Does anyone know if 256 vs. 512 mb RAM would make any difference on this card??? If not, im itching to get the PowerColor that is in stock currently...

The more RAM the better, it seems these days with all the games having much larger textures. I play MSFS mostly and I can tell you the textures in FSX are huge compared to FS9 and that means more RAM is needed. Its much the same with newer games with the eye candy. If you play at high resolutions as me more RAM is better.

I saw on a websites benchmarks that 512MB do very little difference on this card. Cause at high resolutions with lots of anti aliasing and AF would benefit from the extra ram, but since Anti Aliasing do very little impact in performance, tends to be more GPU bound at those resolutions than RAM bound.

They performs identical, sometimes the AGP is a bit faster, and sometimes the PCI-E is a bit faster, but the difference is so hard to see that both platforms will see a good boost in performance. In the only test which the PCI-E outperforms the AGP is in video decoding and encoding, for some reason using AVIVO in this card with an AGP platform utilizes up to 45% more CPU time than an equivalent on PCI-E. Seems that the AGP upstreaming problem can be seen when decoding/encoding video.

The main reason I want to get this is because of the Shader 3.0 support. Since the Xbox 360 came out, a lot of new games ported from that system usually have a 128mb shader 3.0 video card as a system requirement. The way I see it, as long as ports from the 360 come out, the X1950 will be able to play them.
BTW: Will this be a considerable upgrade from a 128mb X800 GT?

Of course it is!! The performance improvements can be between 35% to 65% from your card.

A lot more than that! ,he has the X800GT which only has 8 pixel pipes vs 16 of the XTs
Assuming the 1950 is ~50% faster than an X850XT ,then it would probably be in the area of 100%+ faster ,that's a rough estimate of course

I've been reading reviews of the X1950 AGP and I havent seen this mentioned anywhere. Can you tell me where this info came from? I'm not a gamer and I'm only interested in this card for use in a HTPC so Avivo support and video decoding are very important to me. If it's true then I'll start having to look for another video card. :-(

Retailers seem to be enjoying price gouging

At newegg - $290 512MB
At mwave - $260 256MB
At ncix - $275 512MB.

The odds are you are not going to get any better performance for encoding/decoding than from the X1950PRO without changing to PCIE. If it is AGPs lower upload rate than PCIE nothing but a mobo change is going to help.
