pipes<>vertex shaders!

It has 12 pipes with 36 pixel shaders AND 8 vertex shaders.

No one said it had 12 vertex shaders. People were confused as to how many 'pipes' the card had.

No, but as I mentioned before, with PCI-E you could have paid the same amount if not less for a card that IS undoubtedly faster than the X1950Pro.

Dude, I already said that in the short run, yes, buying an AGP card is cheaper. But in the long run you are shooting yourself in the foot.

You're going to have to buy a new CPU, mobo, RAM and graphics card sometime in the near future anyway if you want to continue gaming on the PC. So why is later better than now? If money is so tight that you dont want to have to pay for a new platform, then why even bother spending $300 on something that is going to be useless to you anyways once you are truly forced to upgrade.

You're only delaying the inevitable and it's costing you more money in the long run then you care to believe.

An XBOX360, Wii, or PS3 would be a much better investment of that $300
for roughly $250 [much less, selling my x850xt] i can happily game for another year

and i can skip the current generation of overpriced PC HW

and upgrade once while you upgrade twice.

take a look here: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=471&card2=382
unless 'texture units' or 'raster operations' is what u define as 'pipes' then then the x1950 agp does not have 12 pipelines. everyone was confused between vertex shaders and pixel pipelines.

The ATI cards can handle 3 pixel shader operations per pipeline. In order for it to have 36 pixel shaders there would have to be 12 pipelines....as 12x3 is 36. If there were only 8, then it would have 24 pixel shaders.

Here is a downloadable press release from Sapphire stating absolutely that this card has in FACT 12 Pixel Pipelines:

I was hoping for more out of Oblivion but 4xAA and bloom still kills the outside framerate with grass on. Its playable, but it sure is annoying to go from silky smooth inside environments to chugging along outside .

Has anyone tried the Catalyst 6.12's out with this card yet? The download size is huge, have they added something significant to the drivers/control center?

try editing the .ini to 'shorten' the grass
there are step-by-steps from the Ob forum links

and forget Bloom ... HDR, baby

no idea about the very latest Cats

Yeah I had been awake for a very long time when I wrote that. I kept saying bloom when I meant HDR. I'll try the grass modification out .

Well, more like the horse's elbow, or maybe it's OC'ed brother. Sapphire's X1950P AGP PR states a wimpy 8 pipes but the full 36 shaders, and this is probably where ZZF got their specs from. But it's PR, and so probably wrong simply b/c the card name implies 12 pipes. I notice Diamond's X1950P AGP page just lists 36 pixel and 8 vertex shaders, with no mention of pipes. Maybe Sapphire just blindly copied the "36" and "8."

Man I wish I could get my hands on one of these now. My problem is that if I buy a new PCI-e MB I have to get rid of one of my HD's and Optical drives most likely as all the MB's I see have only 1 ATA controller for 2 devices, where I have 4 now. Add in new memory, new CPU, new video, and I have a lot of cash to spend. I'll wait a year and get one in 2008 with quad core and hybrid HD's. For now my Opteron 165 at 2.25Ghz and this will work nicely and I would buy a new board anyway in a year so its not a big deal.

But that reseller's price of $18 is silly. They can be had for less than $8 shipped or maybe you can pick 'em up cheaper locally.

Thanks for the tips, I didn't know that there was a bridge from ATA to SATA. Though if there are problems with Linux compatability that would be a problem since I am running Ubuntu 6.10 on my desktop here.

Yeah, I can't boot to Linux if that device is used on my CD-RW..Linux kernel infinitely reports errors with ata1 device. Works just fine in Windows.

As for X1950Pro AGP, I've looking everywhere, and only VisionTek is available now @BestBuy, but it is quite loud. While Sapphire and PowerColor ones are quiet for sure.

Seems that Diamond and VisionTek have exact same design, just different label on heatsink.

what a horrible launch. the 7800gs had a very nice neat launch date where they all appeared on the same day on e-tailers. i remember getting one on the first day from newegg. this one feels like ill need to wait a month or 2.

Two more USA retailers showing the Sapphire X1950 Pro AGP 512MB version for backorder:

Excaliberpc.com @ $240.48

Aztelcomputers.com @ $257.40

Looks like the $250 +/- price range is holding so far...

Woo woo. But remember, the zzf price includes shipping so may be equivalent to $240 elsewhere. As the 256MB retail target was $230 that initial price for 512MB wouldn't be bad at all.

In case anyone's wondering, that?s the Diamond Viper ATI X1950PRO AGP 512MB.

Still no word from Powercolor? I?m hanging out for that because of the Accelero X2 cooler. It was originally supposed to be available mid-November.:frown:
