Hi guys,

I'm sorry if this is a newbie question, but I've been thinking of getting the x1950pro for my desktop. It runs mostly as a HTPC with BeyondTV as the front end, with a little bit of video editing and a little bit of gaming. But mostly, it records TV using MPEG2 capture cards and outputs it to an LCD TV running at 720p. The current card is a 9600xt, and things work well, I'm just wondering if I will get better video quality if I upgrade to the x1950? Would I notice any other improvements like less cpu overhead when playing video? How about dvd playing?

Thanks!

Well, after a month of waiting, I've finally placed my order. Thanks for the heads up, postmortemIA.

dartmouth001:

Well the X1950Pro has HDCP support, though I'm not too clear to what extent it is applied. In terms of quality of video playback, I cannot tell you as I have no idea. As far as I'd imagine it, playback video quality depends mostly on resolution, as there is very little rendering being done. A new video card obviously cannot increase the native resolution of your display.

Beats me, gotta ask someone who knows more about HTPC.

I recommend to change PSU.
Which card are you going to buy: 512mb or 215mb ?
Probably 256mb powercolor.
Anyway, if I have to buy a new PSU as well it will be too expensive.. I'll probably go for the 7800GS then..

Newegg rised prise on 7800GS to $278, i was thinking it will drope price to $200 after
anouncing X1950Pro, i don't know what's going on.

Yeah, I noticed the price (I kinda check it every day), dunno why they did it. Was something like $230 before. I'll check the benchmarks again, and if at low resolutions the difference isn't too much, I'll probably get a 7800GS..

mahalo ... what i need at the price i can afford

*ordered*

i guess it was in stock
:Q

anyone need a good x850xt that was overclocked only a few hours that will run at PE clocks?
[*for testing purposes only* ... yeah it got hot once but not dangerously]

santa is late ... better late than never.

Try EBay. I did really well and sold my X850XT-PE on Ebay for $202.50, which brought the cost of the Sapphire down to $47.50 for me.
good for you!

ANYWAY, i am holding on to my x850xt a bit longer ... i was too late ... and the x1950p was OOS ... no worries ...

NewEgg is OOS also on the Sapphire and only had the Diamond ...

for $300 :Q

no way ... i think stock will catch up with demand

You know what i think about? how long thise card gona last. One year?
If someone CRAZY will realise one game with SH 4 support-THAT"S ALL, maybe we are wasting $$$ for it?
8800 series got SH 4, this means some kind of game will apear soon enough and then what?

The big games coming out this year are deep into development and more or less all SM3.

one year?!?

impossible

just won't happen ... unless you count MS ... with a "Vista Only" game

and that game will be *so buggy* it will take a year to run it properly

*all* i am asking for is "another year" from my x1950p ... i am building an uber-rig next year. ... i was gonna 'make do' with my x850xt ...

On the verge of hitting buy, any 6800 Ultra people upgrade to this and can comment on NWN2 and Oblivion FPS and IQ improvements? $250 is not worth only a 15% FPS improvement (I do not use FSAA, but I do use AF @ 1600X1200).

re read the entire thread ...

it's much better than 15%

i upgraded my x850xt to x1950p ... for the second time

worth it to me

[you and i can sell our old AGP cards for at least $100] ... $150 is a reasonable upgrade for ~ 1/3rd more FPS and better IQ.

Wow, big thanks for the heads up. I managed the same price you did. I can't believe it was this popular.

and now ZipZoomFly is ooS ...

... even though i paid a few bucks more than postmortemIA with eWiz ... it does seem to be on the way

i think ATi and nvidia FINALLY understand there is a larger AGP market then they imagined ...

i DID tell them ... 18 months ago ... here ... and NO one believed

trying to force us into PCIe and SLI ...

we're just 'not ready'

gotta thank AEG for 'passing my message' on to them ....

Bah, waited too long, its on back order:|

but you WILL get one ... and probably cheaper than i am paying ($250) ... it isn't like there isn't any new stock coming

Ever since i picked up the VisionTek x1950p ... i knew i liked it ... but wanted the 512MB version ... and now i [evidently] have it at the price i waited for ... i imagine if i wait longer it will drop further ... and so will the value of my x850xt.

so i 'jumped' [3 times ... and evidently got one]

i know i will have no buyers remorse

Just keep checking HERE and in Hot Deals ... also make sure you have the e-tailer notify you when it is back in stock.

My Sapphire 512mb card arrived last night. Plugged it into my old Antec 430 ps and it fired right up without a hitch. I was playing COF2 15 min after opening the box. It's so much better than the 9800 pro it replaced. Feels like I got a new system again! Money well spent IMO...

Do you know how many amperes your PSU has on the 12V rail?
